Police Report: December 13-19

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

December 19th:

4300 block of 28th Place: Vehicle impound – 12:20am. Officers impounded a 2010 Toyota Tundra for being parked in a handicapped space without a permit.

4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station): EPS – 3:50am. Officers patrolling the area saw a man lying in the parking lot who appeared to be unconscious. Further investigation revealed that he had previously been acting erratically and was exhibiting all the signs of being under the influence of PCP. EMS arrived on the scene and he was transported to Washington Adventist Hospital for emergency medical and psychiatric evaluation.

3100 block of Bunker Hill Road: Burglary – 12:55pm. Officers responded for the report of a burglary in progress. When they arrived they checked the home and found no one inside. Further investigation revealed that the suspect(s) entered the home from an upstairs window and were startled by the victim returning home. A cell phone was the only item reported stolen. The scene was processed for evidence and PGPD detectives were notified of the crime for follow-up. 

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road (Advanced Auto): Theft – 2pm. Store employees told officers that a black male came into the store, picked up a car battery from a shelf and left the store without paying for it. Store management tried unsuccessfully to locate the suspect as did the officers canvassing the area.

December 18th:

3200 block of Shepherd Street: Tampering – 1am. The owner of a 2007 Chevy told officers that while sitting in his house with the window open he heard the door to his car open. When he looked out to investigate he saw a man about 6’ tall wearing a big puffy jacket and a ski mask standing by the car’s open door. When he yelled out to the man he immediately fled the area on foot. Officers canvassed the area for the suspect to no avail. The victim stated that his vehicle was unlocked and nothing was taken.

3700 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 1:40am. Officers canvassing the area for the suspect in the above tampering incident stopped a man fitting the general description given by the victim. Further investigation revealed that he was not involved in the tampering but did have two open arrest warrants through Prince George’s County for trespassing and destruction of property. He was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3800 block of 34th Street: Criminal Citation – 9:25am. Officers issued a woman a criminal citation for drinking in public.

2200 block of Varnum Street (Family Dollar): Theft – 3:40pm. Store employees told officers that a black male in his early to mid- twenties came into the store and stole several items of clothing valued at under $100. The suspect fled on foot and a canvass of the area was met with negative results.

One Municipal Place: Criminal Citation – 3:45pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3700 block of 35th Street: Criminal Citation (x2) – 4:20pm. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for drinking in public.

One Municipal Place: Criminal Citation – 6:20pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

December 17th:

2900 block of Arundel Road: Robbery (arrest). On November 27th a home invasion robbery occurred in an apartment in the 2900 block of Arundel. Shortly after the robbery PGPD detectives developed a possible suspect through investigatory measures. The victim was shown a six person photographic array at which time he identified the female suspect as a principal participant in the robbery. Detectives obtained a warrant for her arrest charging her with home invasion robbery, 1st degree assault and various other charges. With the assistance of the PGPD Fugitive Unit she was located at an address in NE DC where she was arrested. During questioning after her arrest she waived her rights and provided a statement admitting her involvement in the robbery.

3500 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Traffic – 12:05pm. Officers stopped a 2004 Jeep Liberty for an equipment violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had a suspended license and the vehicle’s registration expired back in May. The driver was charged accordingly and the vehicle was impounded. 

4700 block of 27th Street: Fraud – 1:45pm. The victim reported that he was made aware of two consumer accounts that were opened in his name without his consent or knowledge. Both fraudulent accounts originated in the state of Michigan. The victim has contacted the credit reporting agencies and is in the process of repairing his credit report.

December 16th:

4200 block of 30th Street: MIR – 3pm. Officers responded for the report of a person soliciting. He was located, identified and found to be soliciting for an energy company. He was advised of the City’s solicitation permit process and released.

Russell Avenue and Kaywood Drive: Recovered stolen auto – 9:10pm. Officers patrolling with an automated license late reader were alerted to a 1996 Honda Accord reported stolen from an address in Montgomery County on December 15th. The vehicle had a defeated ignition but was drivable and still had both tags attached. The vehicle was impounded and Montgomery County Police were notified of the recovery.

December 15th:

2900 block of Arundel Road: Criminal citation – 12:30am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

2200 block of Varnum Street: Criminal citation – 9:25pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3200 block of Buchanan Street: Found property – 8:20am. Officers took possession of a wallet found by a citizen on the side walk at the corner of Queens Chapel Road and Buchanan Street.  The wallet contained several debit cards and identification cards. The wallet was placed into MRPD property for safe keeping. 

3700 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 9:20am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3500 block of Newton Place: Vehicle impound – 11:20qm. Officers impounded a 2004 Honda that was unregistered and had no tags attached.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: MIR – 12:30pm. A man reported that he purchased four airline tickets at the Mount Rainier Variety Store back in September. When he attempted to confirm the tickets with the airline he was told that the tickets were not valid. Officers spoke with the owner/manager who said that the tickets were reserved but were cancelled because her store didn’t complete the purchase. The store owner/ manager made a new reservation today and she will notify Lopez when everything is clear for him to travel. 

Queenstown Drive and Chillum Road: Criminal citation – 12:55pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

December 14th:

Rhode Island Avenue and 34th Street: M/V collision – 2:55am. The driver of a 2012 Toyota Camry told officers that he was coming around the traffic circle when he lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a curb and a light pole. The vehicle was disabled and was impounded. Pepco was notified of the damage to the pole. 

Chillum Road and Queenstown Drive: M/V collision – 2:10pm. Investigation revealed that two cars were stopped at a stop sign. The first car started to proceed through the intersection and abruptly stopped. The second car did not stop and rear ended the first. The driver and passenger in the first car were taken to a local hospital for a checkup for minor injuries.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Vehicle impound – 2:40pm. Officers impounded a 1994 Honda that was parked in the roadway displaying expired tags.

December 13th:

Nothing significant to report.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
