Police Report: November 29 - December 5

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

December 5th:

3600 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Assault – 4am. Officers interviewed a woman who said that after a night of drinking her boyfriend used a brick to break the driver’s door window and rear window of her 2002 Toyota Camry. She said that he also struck her several times but did not show any visible signs of being assaulted. The boyfriend had fled the area prior to the officers’ arrival. The victim was advised of her options with the District Court Commissioner. She was offered a ride to the Commissioner’s office but refused.

3300 block of Otis Street: Threat of arson – 6:35am. Officers responded for the report of an unwanted guest. When they arrived they learned that the victim’s daughter’s boyfriend came into the home through the daughter’s bedroom window. The boyfriend eventually left but before doing so threated to return and burn the house down. Officers contacted the PGFD fire investigator’s office who began a criminal investigation. MRPD officers later learned that after interviewing the victim fire investigators obtained an arrest warrant for the boyfriend charging him with threatening the crime of arson.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 1:45pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

December 4th:

Chillum Road and Queens Chapel Road: Traffic – Officers stopped a 2000 Plymouth after learning that that the tags displayed were listed to a Honda. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a driver’s license, the vehicle was unregistered and the attached tag was a color photocopy. The vehicle was impounded and the driver charged accordingly.

3100 block of Bunker Hill Road: MIR – 12pm. Officers responded for the report of a theft of vehicle tags. They met with the owner of a 2006 Honda Odyssey who said that she parked her van in back of her house sometime during November 2014 and had not driven it since. When she went out to the vehicle this morning she discovered the vehicle’s tags missing. A registration check revealed that the registration expired in April of this year; and there was a pick up order for the tags. Officers are following up with MVA to determine if the tags were seized pursuant to the pick up order.

3200 block of Varnum Street: Vandalism – 7:45pm. The complainant showed officers where someone had spray painted offensive language on the roadway. There were no witnesses and no evidence was recovered. Public Works was notified to remove the paint.

December 3rd:

3500 block of Perry Street: M/V collision – 1:25am. Officers investigating a motor vehicle collision found that the driver of a 2001 Jaguar rear ended a parked 2012 Hyundai. They determined that the driver of the Jaguar was under the influence of a CDS. She was arrested and taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation due to her intoxicated state. Her vehicle was impounded and charges for driving under the influence are pending.

2900 block of Queens Chapel Road: Vehicle impound – 8:30am. Officers observed a 2001 Acura parked with a front tag affixed to the rear of the vehicle. Further investigation revealed that the tag belonged on another vehicle that was unregistered. The tag was removed and the vehicle was impounded.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 9:50am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4300 block of Russell Avenue: Theft – 12:20pm. A woman came into the police station to report a theft that occurred on November 26th. She said that she has 20-30 guests for dinner on Thanksgiving and they placed their coats on her bed while they were there. She later discovered that a watch and her wedding ring had been stolen from the bedroom.

34th Street and Rhode Island Avenue: M/V collision – 4:40pm. Officers investigating a motor vehicle collision found that the driver of a 2008 Dodge truck failed to pay full time and attention to his driving and struck a parked 2002 Jaguar.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Vehicle impound – 8:45pm. An officer patrolling with an automated license late reader received an alert for a 2009 Mitsubishi with a suspended registration and a pick up order for the tags. The officer stopped the vehicle and learned that the vehicle had been stopped for the same violation in October by Mount Rainier Officers and the driver still had not corrected the problem. The tags were removed from the vehicle, the vehicle was impounded and the driver was charged accordingly.

3300 block of Chillum Road: 2nd degree assault – 10:10pm. The victim told officers that she was walking home from the 7-11 when a man she knew approached and offered her two bottles of vodka. When she refused and told the man to leave her alone he struck her in the face and grabbed her coat. The victim hit the man with her 7-11 bag and pushed him away whereupon he hit her again, made additional verbal threats and fled on foot. The victim was advised to seek charges and a protective order.

December 2nd:

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road (Sunoco station): Theft from auto – 1:25pm. The owner of a 2005 Ford Explorer told officers that she was pumping gas when she heard her car door close and saw a black male getting into a red Nissan Altima with her purse. She said the suspect vehicle, which was displaying temporary tags, fled north on Queens Chapel Road.

2500 block of Arundel Road: Tampering – 3:45pm. Officers received information from the reporting person that two men were seen trying the door handles on his vehicle at about 2pm. The two men were described as black males, 6’ tall with average builds, and about 40 years of age. A relative of the reporting person recorded the two men on a cell phone and officers are in the process of trying to identify them

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: EPS – 4pm. Officers responded to the Mount Rainier library for the report of a disorderly person. When they arrived they located the man in question who was yelling and screaming at employees and patrons threatening to assault them. When officers tried to speak with the man it was immediately apparent that he was not acting rational. He told the officers that he worked for the government as a secret agent and could read people thoughts. Officers took him into custody and transported him to a local hospital where they filled a petition for an emergency psychiatric evaluation.

December 1st:

3200 Block of Queenstown Drive: Property damage – 8:30am. The owner of a 2001 Ford told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning and discovered damage to the car’s left front bumper. The damage may have been caused by another vehicle.

4600 block of 29th Street: MIR – 11:05am. MRPD officers assisted PGPD investigators with the execution of a search and seizure warrant. The resident had posted musical recording equipment on a social media site that had been taken in a burglary. The property was recovered and the suspect was arrested by PGPD.

One Municipal Place: Theft – 1:40pm. On November 25th officers arrested a woman and charged her with disorderly conduct. When she was arrested she was in possession of a cell phone that was receiving messages from the rightful owner that the phone was stolen and he was trying to recover it. After contacting the owner and verifying that the phone was in fact stolen, officers applied for an arrest warrant charging the woman with theft.

November 30th:

3300 block of Chillum Road: MIR – 9:50am. Officers interviewed a woman who said that she has been receiving harassing telephone calls and text messages from a former boyfriend. She was encouraged by the officers to pursue a peace or protective order against the man.

3700 block of 34th Street: Drinking in public – 2:30pm. Officers on patrol came upon a man lying unconscious in the roadway obstructing traffic; and who was almost struck by several vehicles trying to pass. Officers assisted the man out of the roadway and to the side of the road whereupon they saw him take a drink of an alcoholic beverage. He was arrested and charged with drinking in public and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4700 block of 25th Street: Suspicious person – 10:55pm. Officers responded for the report of an injured man knocking on apartment doors asking for an ambulance. The reporting person told the officers that a  black male approximately 20-30 years of age, 6’ 00 “ tall, 200lbs, wearing a tan jacket, blue jeans, grey boxers exposed, and a black knit hat knocked on her door. She said the man appeared to have blood in the area of his eye. When she went to call police the man left the building in an unknown direction. Officers searched the area for the man but were not able to locate him.

November 29th:

Nothing significant to report.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. H1N1 Influenza Information

With the outbreak of the H1N1 flu virus now affecting residents across the United States, and the possibility that some Maryland residents may have been infected with the disease, the Mayor & Council along with the MRPD deemed it wise to let Mount Rainier residents know of precautions that individuals should take in order to minimize the possibility of being infected by this virus.
