Police Report: Week of May 22-28

May 22nd:

3700 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Traffic/vehicle impound – 2:15 am. Officers issued the driver of a 2006 Mercedes several traffic citations including driving without a license. The vehicle was impounded.

May 23rd:

4400 block of 28th Place: Vehicle impound – 12:25 pm. Officers impounded a 2001 Ford Mustang for expired registration.

3800 block of 32nd Street: Theft – 6:50 pm. A man described as a black male, approximately 6’1” tall and weighing about 210 lbs. driving a white Chevy Suburban with DC tags approached the victim while he was sitting on his front porch. The victim, thinking the man had a gun went inside. When he came back out he noticed his cell phone, keys and his wallet missing.

3200 block of Shepherd Street: Vehicle impound – 11:55 pm. Officers impounded a 1992 Chevy Caprice for being unregistered and uninsured.

May 24th:

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Theft of services – 11:20 am. A resident reported that, according to a Comcast technician, a resident in another apartment had tapped into his Comcast connection in order to obtain free cable. Comcast investigators will investigate and bring any criminal charges.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Stolen auto – 6:45 pm. The owner of a 1994 Dodge Acclaim reported that someone stole his car sometime between May 22nd and today.

3000 block Queens Chapel Road: Motor vehicle collision – 8:10 pm. A bicyclist riding on the roadway ran into the back of a vehicle that was stopped in traffic. There were no injuries and only minor damage to the vehicle and bicycle.

4000 block of 35th Street: Protection order – 11:15 pm. Officers served two separate court issued protection orders on an individual. Officers explained both orders to the man and sent him on his way.

May 25th:

Nothing significant to report.

May 26th:

2700 block of Arundel Road: Recovered stolen license plate – 8:10 am. A parking enforcement officer located a vehicle displaying a stolen license plate. The license plate was recovered and the vehicle on which it was displayed was impounded.

3300 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Theft – 9:35 am. The victim reported that his wallet was stolen from inside his shoulder bag sometime during the day on May 21st.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 11 am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3200 block of Queenstown Drive: Stolen auto – 2:40 pm. The owner of a 2002 Dodge Stratus reported her vehicle stolen.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Residential burglary – 6 pm. The resident reported that she left her apartment at 9 am this morning and when she returned she discovered that an unknown quantity of change was missing from her change jar. Officers found no evidence of forced entry to the apartment.

May 27th:

4200 block of 30th Street: Vehicle impound – 8:20 am. Officers operating a license plate reader discovered a 2002 Crown Victoria displaying California registration plates that expired in September of 2010. The vehicle was impounded.

3400 block of Otis Street: Traffic/vehicle impound – 3:45 pm. Officers stopped a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis for a traffic violation. They learned that the driver had a suspended DC license and the vehicle was not registered to him. He was issued two traffic citations and the vehicle was impounded.

3400 block of Newton Street: Theft – 8:20 pm. The homeowner reported that sometime between 6:30 am and the time of the report someone broke into his storage shed and stole a lawn mower and a weed eater.

2500 block of Arundel Road: Vandalism to auto – 9:30 pm. The owner of a 2009 Toyota Corolla reported that sometime between 7 pm and the time of the report someone broke her windshield.

3200 block of Chillum Road: DWI arrest – 11:10 pm. Officers arrested a man for driving under the influence of alcohol after he was stopped for being involved in a minor traffic collision. He was also cited for several additional traffic violations including driving without a license.

3500 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant arrest – 11:30 pm. After a traffic stop officers arrested the driver because he had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for failing to appear in court on a charge of DUI. 

May 28th:

2300 block of Varnum Street: Criminal citation – 3 am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for stealing several items from the 7-11.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 8:45 am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. With the outbreak of the H1N1 flu virus now affecting residents across the United States, and the possibility that some Maryland residents may have been infected with the disease, the Mayor & Council along with the MRPD deemed it wise to let Mount Rainier residents know of precautions that individuals should take in order to minimize the possibility of being infected by this virus.
