REMINDER - National Night Out

Please come out and celebrate National Night Out next Tuesday, August 2 nd . This year’s National Night Out will be held on the grounds of the Mount Rainier Nature Center  located at the intersection of 31 st Street and Arundel Road between 6 pm and 9 pm. Bring your family and friends and enjoy an evening of live entertainment, plenty of food, and lots of fun things to do for the whole family. Entertainment this year is provided by the Proverbs Reggae Band and we will have pony rides for the kids, and the ever popular Chubbzy the Clown will be there to entertain and paint your face!   I hope to see everyone next Tuesday night. I have it on good authority (National Weather Service) that the temperature should be in the low 90s or high 80s, so come celebrate a break in the heat with your friends and neighbors at National Night Out!

Police Report: July 17-24

July 17 th : 3600 block of Eastern Avenue : Stolen auto – 10:10 am. The owner of a 1997 Jeep Cherokee told officers that he had a party and there were several intoxicated persons at his residence. One patron of the party asked for a ride home due to being intoxicated but the victim refused. The subject then asked permission to sleep off his intoxication in the victim’s vehicle. The victim supposedly declined then placed the keys on the table. When the victim woke up the vehicle and the keys were gone. The victim is unsure who took the vehicle. He believes it was the patron who asked for the ride but does not know for sure. 30 th and Upshur Streets : Hit and run collision – 12:40 pm. Officers investigated a hit and run collision between a Metro bus and a 2004 Honda Accord. The bus struck the Honda, which was illegally parked, and fled the scene. Police Report: July 10-16

July 10 th : 3700 block of Rhode Island Avenue : DUI arrest – 12:10 am. Officers stopped a 1994 Honda Civic for a traffic violation. While speaking to the driver the officers suspected he was under the influence of alcohol. He submitted to standard field sobriety testing and failed the tests. He was arrested, charged with DUI/DWI and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. Chillum Road and Buchanan Street : Warrant service – 3 am. Officers stopped a 1999 Volvo for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the drive had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for failing to appear in court on a charge of driving without a license. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. 4200 block of 28 th Street : Residential burglary – 11:05 am. Officers received a call that an individual was climbing into an apartment through a bathroom window. The officers later learned that this suspect, one into the apartment opene

Police Report: July 3-9

July 3 rd : 3100 block of Queens Chapel Road : Pedestrian struck – 7:10 pm. The driver of a 2010 Ford Fusion told officers that on July 2 nd at about 8:40 am he struck a pedestrian as he was backing out of a parking space. The pedestrian was not injured and refused the driver’s request to notify police. However, the driver’s insurance company required a police report to document the incident. 4300 block of Kaywood Drive : Vandalism to auto – 11:55 am. The reporting person told officers that someone flattened three tires on to her mother’s 1999 Honda Accord and possibly poured sugar into the gas tank. Further investigation revealed that the incident might be domestic related. A possible suspect was identified but there was no probable cause for arrest. 4000 block of 36 th Street : Stolen auto – 3:45 pm. The owner of a 1994 Dodge truck reported that while he was taking tools from his truck to a back yard job someone stole the vehicle. The owner said that the truck was left unattended

Police Report: July 1-2

July 1 st : 4000 block of 33 rd Street : Theft from auto – 6:45 am. A GPS unit was stolen from inside of a 2005 Ford F150 truck. Thieves broke in through the driver’s side window. 2900 block of Arundel Road : Attempted stolen auto – 8:05 pm. The owner of a 1997 Honda Civic reported that someone broke into the vehicle causing damage to the front passenger window, steering column, ignition, and dash board. July 2 nd : Queens Chapel Road and Chillum Road : Traffic – 12:20 am. Officers stopped a 2006 Range Rover for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the registration was suspended for a emissions and insurance violations. The driver was issued several citations, the tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was towed by the owner’s private tow company. 3100 block of Queens Chapel Road : 2 nd degree assault – 11:40 am. Press Release

July 2, 2011 At about 6 am this morning an off-duty Mount Rainier Police officer was involved in a shooting in the Town of Capitol Heights, Maryland. The officer was apparently the victim of an attempted carjacking and fired his service weapon to defend himself against the attack. The suspect was struck multiple times in the upper body and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. The officer was also transported to a local hospital for injuries sustained in the attack. Barricade Incident

Just before Noon this afternoon officers from the Metro Transit Police Department stopped a vehicle for a tag violation. While a Metro Transit officer was issuing the driver a citation the driver got back into his car and attempted to strike the officer with the car as he fled the scene. Metro officers tracked the man to an address in the 3800 block of 32 nd Street where he barricaded himself inside the house. Metro PD set up a perimeter in the surrounding blocks and called their emergency services team to the scene to prepare for a possible forced entry into the house. Once the perimeter was established MRPD officers responded, assessed the situation and took the lead in resolving the incident. MRPD officers were able to reach the suspect by phone and, after about 45 minutes were able to get the suspect to come out of the house and surrender peacefully. Police Report: June 26-30

June 26 th : 3400 block of Otis Street : Vehicle impound – 8 pm. Officers impounded a Honda 107cc dirt bike that was being ridden illegally by an individual who did not have a driver’s license. June 27 th : 4500 block of 29 th Street : Strong arm robbery – 8:40 pm. Officers learned that the victim, a hearing impaired man, was approached by a black male on a black bicycle. The man pushed the victim down, went through his pockets and stole his cell phone. He then took the victim’s hearing aids and fled on the bike northbound on Arundel Road. The suspect was described as a black male in his 20’s wearing a black shirt and gray shorts riding a black bicycle. 2400 block of Chillum Road : Recovered stolen license plates – 7:50 pm. Officers patrolling the area with a mobile license plate reader (LPR) received a hit on a vehicle displaying stolen tags. The officers stopped the vehicle and determined that the license plated attached to it had been reported stolen from an address in Prince Ge
