October 27 th : 3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue : M/V collision – 3:30am. Officers responded for the report of a 2-vehicle collision between a 2009 Jaguar and a 2011 Chevy Camaro. The driver of the Camaro sustained non- life threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the Jaguar and a passenger both fled the scene on foot and were not identified; and the Jaguar driver was found at fault in the collision. Both vehicles were inoperable after the collision and were towed from the scene. 4600 block of 29 th Street : Residential burglary – 9:15am. The residents told officers that they were awakened at about 3:40am by a loud noise. Thinking that the noise came from an adjacent apartment both residents went back to bed. Upon awakening at about 9:15am they discovered that someone had cut the window screens in the dining room. Investigation revealed that those responsible did not gain entry into the apartment. From the City Manager: The City of Mount Rainier is open today and will remain open the remainder of the day. Please note that this City of Mount Rainier and the City of Seat Pleasant are the only local governments open to our knowledge in Prince George’s County as of this communication. All Federal and DC Government Offices are closed as well as Metro Bus and Rail service. The State of Maryland is also closed and Governor O’Malley has issued warning for people to stay indoors. I elected along with ACM Jackson to keep the offices open today since the height of storm with severe wind gusts is not expected until 5pm this evening through all day tomorrow. We will notify both Fox 5 and WUSA 9 of the City of Mount Rainier closure tomorrow. We have already been experiencing limited cell phone usage and disruption in the alarm service at City Hall. There is an increasingly strong possibility that hurricane Sandy will affect the City and the Metro region beginning Sunday evening and extending into Tuesday. The MRPD has made preparations to have all officers available for duty during the storm and will be patrolling the City to identify hazards and other safety concerns. From the Capital Weather Gang : There is potential for a significant to historic East Coast storm next week, but there is also potential for no storm. For the D.C. area, the most likely impacts would be wind and rain if there’s a storm, with perhaps a snow threat in the mountains. Of all locations, the beaches are most likely to be affected (possible impacts: coastal flooding, beach erosion).Stay tuned to forecasts over the coming days. It will probably take until mid-to-late week or even longer for forecasters to have a decent handle on this complicated weather scenario.

October 20 th : 3400 block of Taylor Street : Vandalism to auto – 9:50am. The owner of a 2006 Mini Cooper told officers that sometime between 6pm on the 19 th and the time she called police someone used a hard object to “key” (scratch) the entire driver’s side of the vehicle. Kaywood Place and Kaywood Drive : M/V collision – 1pm. Officers investigated a collision between a 2010 Honda Civic and a 2001 BMW X5. Their investigation revealed that the driver of the Honda failed to yield the right-of-way to the BMW causing the collision. The officers also learned that the Honda’s tags were suspended for a compulsory insurance violation with a pick-up order on the tags. It was impounded and the tags seized for return to MVA. 4000 block of 35 th Street : Vehicle impound – 4pm. Officers patrolling using a mobile license plate reader received an alert on a 2003 Mercury Sable for a suspended registration. The suspension was confirmed and the vehicle was impounded. October 13 th : 3200 block of Queenstown Drive : Missing person – 8:50pm. The reporting person told officer s that while living in Greenbelt over fourteen months ago he returned home from a stay in the hospital to find that his 26 year old daughter had removed all of her belongings and moved out. The man said that he was advised by another daughter who resides in Canada to report his daughter missing because no one in the family has heard from or seen her since. The daughter’s information was entered into the NCIC missing persons files. October 12 th : 4100 block of 28 th Street : Theft from auto – 8:30am. The owner of a 2005 Honda Accord told officers that sometime between 6:30pm on October 11 th and the time he called police someone entered his vehicle and stole a power adapter from inside. Decrease due to active residents, enforcement, officials say Timothy Sandoval, The Gazette Mount Rainier’s reported crimes have dropped to their lowest point in 10 years, according to data released earlier this month by the city’s police department. From January through September of this year, the number of reported crimes in the city was 228 — the lowest total in nearly a decade. At its highest point in 2003, the total number of crimes was 475 at the end of September, with the number jumping to 648 by the end of the year, according to the police department. Larceny, burglary and auto theft are the crimes that have decreased the most since last year, according to the data. Crimes such as assault and robbery were up slightly compared to the same time period last year. The next lowest total was 272 at the end of September in 2009, with the number at 370 by the end of the year, according to police. Police make arrest in seven-year-old Mount Rainier murder case with help of FBI database. Michael Theis, Hyattsville Patch A routine search of an FBI DNA database led police to the arrest of a suspect in the murder of a Mount Rainier man which happened seven years ago. Back in May 17, 2005, 49-year-old Reginald Taborn was found stabbed to death is in his home on the 3300 block of Buchanan Street in Mount Rainier. At the time, investigators working the case collected a number of items found at the scene for DNA testing. The case went cold for seven years until recently, when a routine search of the FBI Laboratory Federal Convicted Offender DNA Database produced a match. The hit led police to 41 year-old Marcus Levi Brown, of the 1200 block of 7th Street. Brown, an acquaintance of Taborn, was arrested yesterday and stands charged with second degree murder.

October 6 th : 3700 block of 34 th Street : Vehicle impound – 2:10am. Officers impounded a 2005 Acura TL for parking in a no parking zone. The vehicle had been parked illegally for some time and already been issued a parking ticket for the violation. Chillum Road and Queenstown Drive : Warrant service – 3:55am. Officers stopped a 2006 Ford Taurus for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s license was revoked and the passenger had two open arrest warrants through Montgomery County for traffic related charges. The passenger was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. The driver was issued the appropriate traffic citations and released. The vehicle was impounded. 2700 block of Arundel Road : Vehicle impound – 7:45am. Officers patrolling with an automatic license plate reader were alerted to a 2005 Dodge Neon that had a suspended registration and an MVA pickup order on the tags. September 29 th : 34 th Street and Windom Road : Hit and run collision – 8:30pm. The owner of a 2011 Chevy Camaro told officers that while she was stopped at the stop sign a vehicle she could not describe crashed into the rear end of her vehicle. The striking vehicle immediately fled the scene of the collision. The owner was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Her vehicle was legally parked and the keys returned to her. September 28 th : 4200 block of 34 th Street : Theft – 9:15am. The owner of a Cannondale 15-speed bicycle reported that someone stole the bike from the rear of his driveway. The bike had been left there previously by the owner’s friend, but was not locked. The crime statistics for the month of September 2012 show a decrease of 24.25% in crime as compared to the same period in 2011. The 23 Part I crimes reported during September 2012 is the lowest total for the month of September in the past ten years. Over those ten years the average number of Part I crimes reported from January through September is 357. The 228 so far in 2012 puts us 36% below the ten-year average. Since 2003 Part I crime is down 52% with 45% of the reduction coming since 2006.
