Police Report: October 7-13

October 13th:

3200 block of Queenstown Drive: Missing person – 8:50pm. The reporting person told officer s that while living in Greenbelt over fourteen months ago he returned home from a stay in the hospital to find that his 26 year old daughter had removed all of her belongings and moved out. The man said that he was advised by another daughter who resides in Canada to report his daughter missing because no one in the family has heard from or seen her since. The daughter’s information was entered into the NCIC missing persons files.

October 12th:

4100 block of 28th Street: Theft from auto – 8:30am. The owner of a 2005 Honda Accord told officers that sometime between 6:30pm on October 11th and the time he called police someone entered his vehicle and stole a power adapter from inside. The victim told officers that the vehicle was not locked during the time period when the crime occurred.

2800 block of Taylor Street: Theft from auto – 9:10am. The lessee of a 2012 Mazda told officers that when she came out to the vehicle this morning she discovered that someone had broken out the rear passenger side window. Nothing was taken from inside and no evidence was recovered.

2800 block of Taylor Street: Vehicle impound – 10:10am. Officers impounded a 2003 Chevy S10 truck for displaying expired Georgia registration plates.

3200 block of Varnum Street: Vandalism to auto – 11:50am. The owner of a 2002 Chevy Impala told officers that sometime prior to his call to police someone flattened one of the tires on his vehicle.

3200 block of Varnum Street: Emergency petition – 3:20pm. Officers responded for the report of a man standing in a yard with a large knife under his coat. When the officers arrived they stopped the man for questioning. During questioning the man was found to have a knife with an 11” blade strapped across his upper body. He appeared to be rambling about some gang activity from which he was protecting himself. Officers contacted the man’s Grandmother who said that she was just leaving the Hyattsville District Court Commissioner’s office and had in her possession a petition for an emergency psychiatric evaluation signed by a judge.  The petition had been issued on the grounds that the man was suffering from dementia and not taking his medication. Officers took the man into custody and transported him to Washington Adventist Hospital where he was released to medical personnel.

3700 block of 36th Street: Burglary – 6:25pm. Officers met with the resident who told them that when she returned home from work she noticed that the side basement window was open and that the screen had been removed.  With assistance from Hyattsville City Police, officers searched the residence to make sure there was no one inside. Once the residence was safe the resident walked through the house and determined that it had been ransacked and several items of her personal property had been stolen.

October 11th:

3800 block of 35th Street: Traffic/Criminal citation – 9:30pm. Officers stopped a 2002 Mercury Sable for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver was in possession of an open, 40oz bottle of an alcoholic beverage. He was issued a criminal citation for possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle and one traffic citation. He was sent on his way after the officers determined he was sober enough to drive.

October 10th:

4400 block of 28th Place: Recovered stolen auto – 7am. Officers on patrol received a LoJack alert for a stolen Chrysler 300 with Maryland tags in the 2200 block of Varnum Street. Officers began a search for the vehicle and finally located it in the 4400 block of 28th place. The vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.

4200 block of Kaywood Drive: Recovered license plates – 11:30am. Officers patrolling with a mobile license plate reader received an alert on a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The alert showed that the vehicle’s registration was suspended for an insurance violation and there was an MVA pick up order on the tags. The tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was released to the owner.

4300 block of Russell Avenue: CDS arrest – 4:10pm. Officers responded for the report of a suspicious vehicle in the neighborhood. Officers stopped the vehicle in question and learned that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. He refused to submit to alcohol testing and was arrested. A search of his person and his vehicle subsequent to arrest revealed he was in possession of approximately 40 grams of crack cocaine (street value about $8,000) and over $7,000 in cash. The vehicle and the cash were seized as evidence. The man was charged with DWI/DUI and possession of a CDS with the intent to distribute and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. Officers have instituted forfeiture proceedings on the vehicle and the cash.

4300 block of 28th Place: Theft of a license plate – 6:55pm. The owner of a 2008 Toyota Camry told officers that sometime between 5:20pm on October 9th and the time she called police someone stole the rear license plate off her vehicle.

3800 block of 34th Street: Vehicle impound – 9pm. Officers responded for the report of a vehicle on fire. When they arrived they were met by fire/rescue personnel who had already extinguished the fire. The vehicle was a total loss and the owner had the vehicle towed from his property by a private tow company.

3200 Block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 9:25pm. Officers stopped a 2002 Chrysler Sebring for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that a passenger in the vehicle had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for theft. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. The driver was issued the appropriate traffic citations and released.

October 9th:

4300 block of Kaywood Drive: Theft over $500 – 12:10pm. The victim came into the police station to report the theft of jewelry from her apartment sometime between September 2nd and October 6th this year. She told officers that during that time she had several guests visit her home but could not be sure if any of them was responsible for the theft; and that there were no instances of forced entry into the home during the time period.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue (MRPD): Warrant service – 7:25pm. On October 5th officers investigated a burglary/assault in the 3700 block of 35th Street. As a result of their investigation a warrant was obtained for the suspect’s arrest charging him with 2nd degree assault and burglary. At about 7:25pm today the suspect came into the police station to surrender on the warrant. He was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville without incident.

October 8th:

Nothing significant to report.

October 7th:

4600 block of Chillum Road: Traffic/vehicle impound – 1:45am. Officers stopped a 2005 Scion for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license. He was issued several traffic citations and sent on his way. The vehicle was impounded.

4700 block of 27th Street (Queens Manor Apartments): Assist fire/rescue personnel – 9:30am. Officers responded to assist fire board with the odor of smoke coming from one of several apartments in the building. Firefighters had to force entry into the leasing office and an adjacent apartment to find out where the smoke odor was coming from. No fire was located and the damage was confined to the doors of the units forcibly entered by the fire department.

Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi

Police Report: June 9-10

June 9th : 2500 block of Allison Street : At about 1 pm officers took a report of a citizen robbery . The victim told the officers and PGPD robbery detectives that she arrived to meet a client when she was approached by two black males. One of the men approached her from the front; the second came up behind her and placed her in a head lock. The second man demanded the keys to her gold 2005 Honda Accord (MD tags 9FA Y36). The victim complied and the two got into her car and fled the scene. The victim described her assailants as black males about 19-20 years of age. The first man was about 5’8” tall with shoulder length dreadlocks and was wearing a white t-shirt, long jean shorts, white socks and tennis shoes. The second man was about 5’10” tall, also had shoulder length dreadlocks and was wearing a white navy hat. The officers also discovered a white 2004 Chevrolet Express van that is believed to have been driven to the scene by the two suspects. A check of the vehicle’s registration

Boston Marathon/West, Texas Spam Campaigns

There is a new spam campaign in circulation using the Boston Marathon bombings that occurred on April 15, 2013 as a lure. Users are sent an e-mail encouraging them to a watch a video of the explosion. When the user clicks on the enclosed link to watch the video malware is installed on the user’s computer.   The following URL patterns have been found in these e-mails: http://[IP-address]/boston.html   http://[IP-address]/news.html   When the user clicks on one of the links the Kehlios worm is installed on the user’s system which has the capacity to send spam; carry out Distributed Denial of Service Attacks; and steal online currency such as bitcoins. Most major anti-virus vendors have signatures for detecting this malware so users should keep their antivirus programs up-to-date.   In addition to the Boston Marathon spam campaign, a West, Texas plant explosion spam campaign has also sprung up.
