Police Report: March 17-23

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

March 23rd:

3500 block of Otis Street: 2nd degree domestic assault – 5am. Officers responded for the report of a domestic assault in progress. When the officers arrived they spoke with the female half of the dispute who said that her husband physically assaulted her during and argument. The male half had left the scene prior to the officers’ arrival but returned just as the officers were assisting the victim with transportation to the District Court Commissioner’s Office. The man was arrested, charged with 2nd degree domestic assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3700 block of 34th Street: Emergency petition – 10:35am. Officers responded for the report of a possible overdose. When they arrived they located a female who was suffering from depression. She had taken a large quantity of medication in an attempt to end her life. She was transported by fire/rescue personnel to a local hospital where she was released to medical personnel for treatment.

4100 block of 28th Street: Stolen auto (Supplement) – 10:30pm. MRPD officers were notified by the Prince George’s County Police Department that their officers recovered a 2004 BMW 745 that had been reported stolen from the 4100 block of 28th Street sometime between 9pm on March 19th and 2:15am on March 20th. The vehicle was recovered near the intersection of Crestmar Court and Rocky Trail Way in Upper Marlboro. The vehicle had been burned and investigators believe that it is connected to a homicide that occurred in DC.

March 22nd:

3300 block of Chillum Road (7-11): Theft – 2am. A store clerk told officers that a black male (NFD) came into the store, reached over the counter and stole four Cigarillos before fleeing the store on foot in an unknown direction.

3500 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 8:35am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3100 block of 37th Street: Suspicious situation – 1:30pm. Officers spoke with the resident who said that she believes that someone tried to break into her residence. Officers investigated the incident and found no signs of forced entry or any evidence to believe a burglary was attempted.

2900 block of Allison Street: Warrant service – 4:30pm. Officers patrolling the apartment complex observed an individual who fit the description of a suspect in a recent burglary. The officers stopped the individual for a field interview. During the interview the officers learned that the individual had an open juvenile arrest warrant for failing to comply with a court order. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of juvenile authorities at the Cheltenham youth facility.

37th and Perry Streets: Motor vehicle collision – 9:35pm. Officers responded for the report of a single vehicle collision. When they arrived they found that a a 2000 Kia Sportage ran into a retaining wall. The driver remained at the scene and officers discovered that he did not have a license. The vehicle was impounded and the driver was issued several traffic citations and released at the scene.

3700 block of 34th Street: Hit and run collision – 10:50pm. Officers spoke with the owner of a 2002 Toyota who said that sometime prior to his call to police a second vehicle struck the driver’s side of his Toyota knocking the mirror off and causing some scratches. No evidence was recovered at the scene.

March 21st:

4300 block of 28th Place: Vehicle impound (x2) – 9:10am. Officers impounded a 1998 Cadillac that had an MVA pickup order for the tags and a 2006 Mercedes that was displaying expired tags.

31st and Webster Streets: Emergency petition – 2pm. Officers responded for the report of a man down. When they arrived they discovered a 14 year old boy who was under the influence of a CDS, possibly PCP. Fire/rescue personnel responded and transported the boy to Washington Adventist Hospital where he was released to medical personnel for treatment. The boy’s mother was contacted and responded to the hospital.

March 20th:

2900 block of Allison Street: Attempted armed robbery UPDATE. PGPD and DC police detectives identified two additional suspects in the attempted armed robbery that occurred on March 15th. Arrest warrants were obtained for both suspects. Detectives also obtained a search and seizure warrant for the home of one of the suspects. While executing the search warrant detectives located and arrested both suspects and recovered several items of evidence linking them to the Allison Street robbery.

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Theft – 1:25am. Officers interviewed a store employee who told them that a man came into the store and stole a pre-made sandwich. The suspect fled the store on foot and headed into the Kaywood Apartments complex. Officers searched the area for the suspect but could not locate him.

4100 block of 28th Street: Stolen auto – 2:15am. The owner of a 2004 BMW 745 told officers that sometime between 9pm on March 19th and the time he called police someone stole his vehicle. The victim said that he did not have his keys with him and was not sure if he left them in the vehicle. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle’s registration was suspended and there was an MSP pick up order for the tags. No evidence as to those responsible for the theft was found at the scene.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue (MRPD): Found property – 7:50am. A citizen came into the police station and turned in a wallet he had found. The wallet contained a small amount of currency and a Nevada driver’s license. The wallet was submitted to property for safekeeping and efforts are underway to notify the owner.

4500 block of 30th Street: Vandalism to auto – 1:45pm. The owner of a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer told officers that sometime between 3:30pm on the 19th and the time he called police someone smashed out his vehicle’s rear passenger side window. The vehicle had not been entered and nothing was stolen.

March 19th:

3300 block of Queens Chapel Road: Traffic – 1:05am. Officers stopped a 2008 Nissan Sentra for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s license was suspended. He was issued the appropriate traffic citations and his vehicle was impounded.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Disorderly – 6:50pm. Officers responded for the report of a fight between two intoxicated individuals. While the officers were trying to sort out the situation one of the individuals became disorderly and continued to create a disturbance. He was eventually arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Theft – 8:25pm. Officers interviewed a store employee who told them that a customer claimed that when he withdrew money from the store’s ATM the machine shorted him $20. The customer asked the employee to reimburse him the money. When the employee refused the customer walked behind the counter and stole $20.00 from the clerk who was making a deposit into the store’s safe. The individual fled the area in an SUV described as a red Ford Expedition with a partial Maryland tag of 0567.

March 18th:

Nothing significant to report.

March 17th:

3000 block of Queens Chapel Road: Theft – 2pm. The resident told officers that she and her mother had been temporarily relocated to another apartment while their original apartment was renovated after a flood. When they returned to the renovated apartment they discovered that a telephone and its charger and a Comcast cable modem had been stolen.

3400 block of Otis Street: Residential burglary – 10pm. The resident told officers that sometime between 5 and 9:30pm today someone entered her apartment through an open bedroom window. Once inside the suspects stole a 50” flat screen TV and an X-Box. The resident said that the bedroom window had been left open from the night before because it was hot in the apartment. No evidence was recovered.

One Municipal Place: Found property – 2:15pm. Officers patrolling the area were approached by a citizen who had found a woman’s purse at the bus terminal. Officers delivered the purse to the department’s property storage area and are in the process of identifying the owner.

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Theft – 7:30pm. A store clerk told officers that a black male described only as wearing a black jacket came into the store stole a set of ear bud headphones before fleeing in an unknown direction. A canvas of the area revealed no further information.

Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi

Police Report: June 9-10

June 9th : 2500 block of Allison Street : At about 1 pm officers took a report of a citizen robbery . The victim told the officers and PGPD robbery detectives that she arrived to meet a client when she was approached by two black males. One of the men approached her from the front; the second came up behind her and placed her in a head lock. The second man demanded the keys to her gold 2005 Honda Accord (MD tags 9FA Y36). The victim complied and the two got into her car and fled the scene. The victim described her assailants as black males about 19-20 years of age. The first man was about 5’8” tall with shoulder length dreadlocks and was wearing a white t-shirt, long jean shorts, white socks and tennis shoes. The second man was about 5’10” tall, also had shoulder length dreadlocks and was wearing a white navy hat. The officers also discovered a white 2004 Chevrolet Express van that is believed to have been driven to the scene by the two suspects. A check of the vehicle’s registration

Boston Marathon/West, Texas Spam Campaigns

There is a new spam campaign in circulation using the Boston Marathon bombings that occurred on April 15, 2013 as a lure. Users are sent an e-mail encouraging them to a watch a video of the explosion. When the user clicks on the enclosed link to watch the video malware is installed on the user’s computer.   The following URL patterns have been found in these e-mails: http://[IP-address]/boston.html   http://[IP-address]/news.html   When the user clicks on one of the links the Kehlios worm is installed on the user’s system which has the capacity to send spam; carry out Distributed Denial of Service Attacks; and steal online currency such as bitcoins. Most major anti-virus vendors have signatures for detecting this malware so users should keep their antivirus programs up-to-date.   In addition to the Boston Marathon spam campaign, a West, Texas plant explosion spam campaign has also sprung up. This spam campaign uses similar exploitation techniques as the Boston Marathon spam campaign p
