Police Report: March 3-9

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

March 9th:

4600 block of 27th Street: Domestic assault – 12:45pm. Officers responded for the report of a domestic dispute. When they arrived they learned that a couple got into a heated argument over religious believes. The argument escalated and the male half damaged the female’s laptop computer. He then grabbed her by the neck and assaulted her. He was arrested, charged with 2nd degree assault  and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4900 block of Rhode Island Avenue (Hyattsville DOC): Destruction of property – 3:20pm. Officers received a call from Riverdale Park Police that an unoccupied Mount Rainier Police cruiser was damaged by one of their arrestee’s at the Hyattsville DOC. When the RPPD officers removed a prisoner from their transport vehicle he attempted to flee to avoid incarceration. A struggle ensued with the Riverdale Park officers during which the fender of the Mount Rainier cruiser was damaged. The incident was documented by both agencies and the arrestee was charged with destruction of property.

3300 block of Buchannan Street: Child abuse – 9pm. Officers responded to a 911 call from an individual yelling that someone was trying to kill them. Upon arrival the officers discovered a 9 year old female hysterical and bleeding from the mouth. Further investigation revealed that the girl’s mother had been drinking and became upset that her daughter had misplaced a cell phone. The mother physically hit her daughter and when the girl tried to call police the mother tried to stop her by kicking her repeatedly in the chest and face. Officers placed the mother under arrest, charged her with assault, child abuse and other offenses and delivered her to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. The girl was transported to a local hospital for medical attention. After she was released from the hospital she was placed temporarily in the home of a friend.  County Child Protective Services was contacted and will be conducting their own follow-up investigation.

March 8th:

2700 block of Arundel Road: CDS arrest – 1:50pm. Officers patrolling the area observed four juvenile males exiting an apartment building where there have been several recent burglaries of vacant apartments. Officers were able to stop and question all four. Further investigation revealed that one of them had an open juvenile warrant for robbery. A second was found in possession of marijuana. Both subjects were arrested. The juvenile with the warrant was delivered to the custody of the juvenile detention facility in Cheltenham. The juvenile with the CDS was charged on a juvenile petition and released to his parents pending Juvenile Court action.

4100 block of 30th Street: Theft – 8pm. A resident called police to report that sometime between 8am this morning and 7:50pm this evening someone stole her recycle bin.

3300 block of Chillum Road (7-11): Theft – 9:45pm. A store clerk told officers that two juvenile males stole several items from the store. Officers searched the area and located both juveniles. The merchandise was returned to the store and the subjects banded from the premises. Store management elected not to press theft charges against the juveniles.

March 7th:

3400 block of Perry Street: Criminal citation – 4:35pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

One Municipal Place: Emergency petition – 4:25pm. Officers responded for the report of a woman sitting in the middle of the street talking to herself. When the officers arrived they found the woman in question and discovered that she was so severely intoxicated that she was a danger to herself. She was taken into custody and transported to Washington Adventist Hospital where she was released to medical personnel for treatment.

2700 block of Arundel Road: Burglary – 5:20pm. Officers responded to assist security officers with two juveniles they had detained for burglarizing a vacant apartment. Officers arrested both and transported to MRPD where they were charged via juvenile petition and released to their respective legal guardians pending Juvenile Court action.

3700 block of Rhode Island AvenueTraffic/criminal citation – 8:15pm. Officers stopped a 2012 Toyota for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle’s tags and the driver’s license were suspended. The driver was issued several State traffic citations and the vehicle was impounded. The tags were seized for return to MVA. Officers also discovered that a back seat passenger was in possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage. He was issued a criminal citation for possession of the open alcohol in a motor vehicle.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Burglary – 5:20pm. The resident told officers that sometime between 6am this morning and the time he called police someone broke into his apartment through the kitchen window. Once inside the unidentified suspects stole a container of coins, a TV and a DVR player before fleeing the scene. No evidence was recovered at the scene.

March 6th:

3200 block of Shepherd Street: Theft from auto – 9am. The owner of a 2003 Honda CRV told officers that sometime between 2am this morning and the time she called police someone broke into her vehicle by smashing out the rear passenger side window. Once inside the thieves stole the vehicle’s in-dash radio. No evidence was recovered and no witnesses were identified.

4000 block of 34th Street: Property damage – 11:35am. The owner of a 2007 Honda Civic told officers that sometime prior to his contacting the police someone dented and scratched the vehicle’s driver side bumper. Officers could not determine if the damage was caused by a second vehicle or by vandalism.

2700 block of Arundel Road: Disorderly conduct – 5:20pm. Officers responded for the report of a possible burglary in progress. When they arrived they discovered that there was no burglary, but a case of two women fighting. The two were separated and officers attempted to calm both of them down. One complied and one continued to yell and scream and curse at the officers. She was arrested, charged with disorderly conduct and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. 

March 5th:

3700 block of 37th Street: Stolen auto – 8:30am. The owner of a 2008 Honda Civic told officers that sometime between 8:30pm on March 4th and the time he called police someone stole his vehicle. No evidence was recovered and the vehicle’s information was entered into NCIC stolen vehicle files. At about 5am on March 6th DC police recovered the vehicle in the 200 block of 16th Street, NE. They arrested a juvenile that was driving. The owner was notified of the recovery.

4600 block of 29th Street: Missing person – 1:30pm. The mother of a 15 year old girl told officers that her daughter took her cell phone and some cash and ran away from home. The mother said that this is the second time her daughter has run away in the past couple weeks. Officers located a witness who saw the girl get on a Metro train with a black male at the West Hyattsville Metro Station. The girl’s information was entered into NCIC missing persons files.

2700 block of Arundel Road: Trespassing – 6:20pm. Officers responded for the report of a possible burglary of an abandoned apartment. While enroute to the call they were notified that witnesses saw four black males running from the apartment. When the officers arrived they found no one in the apartment and a rear window broken out. This was the second time today that officers responded for this type of call at this apartment. Maintenance was notified to secure the apartment and a search of the area for the four suspects was negative.

Chillum Road and Queens Chapel Road: Motor vehicle collision – 11:30pm. Investigation revealed that a 2002 Ford truck and a 1998 Honda Accord collided as both vehicles were making a left turn off Chillum onto Queens Chapel. There were no injuries.

March 4th:

4200 block of 31st Street: Theft – 10:25am. The victim told officers that she believes a friend stole her debit card, driver’s license and social security card. She said that she reported the incident to her financial institution and it is currently under investigation.

3200 block of Perry Street: Open door – 10:55am. Officers responded for a residential alarm. When they arrived they discovered an open door and checked the residence with negative results. There were no signs of forced entry.

3800 block of 37th Street: Warrant service – 4:25pm. Officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for various traffic-related charges. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3200 block of Queenstown Drive: CDS arrest - 6:05pm. Officers responded to assist Queenstown security with an individual they had in custody for possession of CDS. When the officers arrived they verified that the individual was in possession of both marijuana and cocaine. He was arrested, charged accordingly and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4000 block of 31st Street: Burglary – 8pm. Officers responded for the report of a residential burglary that occurred earlier. Upon speaking with the homeowner the officers learned that the burglary occurred sometime between 8am this morning and 7:45 this evening. Evidence indicated that the perpetrator(s) entered the home by forcing open a front window and left through the same window. The homeowner reported that the only thing stolen was an iPod Touch.

4300 block of Russell Avenue: Theft from auto – 8pm. The owner of a 2013 Toyota Corolla told officers that sometime between 2am on March 2nd and the time he called police someone stole the temporary license plate off his vehicle.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Warrant service – 10:30pm. Officers responded to assist Queenstown security with a suspicious person. While interviewing the individual the officers learned that he had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for failing to appear in court on a charge of theft. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

March 3rd:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Emergency petition – 12:35am. Officers responded to assist fire/rescue personnel with the report of a man down and unresponsive. Further investigation revealed that the man was suffering from severe PCP intoxication. He was transported to Prince George’s Hospital where he was released to medical personnel for treatment.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
