Police Report: September 22-28

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

September 28th:

4000 block of 34th Street: Vehicle impound – 7:10am. Officers impounded a 1997 Dodge van after finding it parked on a sidewalk and blocking both a fire hydrant and a stop sign.

3900 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 3:10pm. Officers stopped a 2003 Ford Taurus for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had an open arrest warrant through the Calvert County Sheriff’s office for failing to appear in court on a domestic related charge. He was issued two traffic citations, arrested on the warrant and released to the custody of the CCSO at the Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro.

3800 block of 31st Street: Burglary – 5:20pm. The resident told officers that she left home at about 11:45 this morning locking and securing her residence as she left. When she returned she noticed several items on her dining room table out of place. As she inspected the rest of her home she discovered several additional items of her personal property had been stolen. Officers determined that those responsible entered through an unlocked kitchen window. The residence was processed for evidence.

September 27th:

4700 block of 27th Street: Malicious destruction of property9pm. A man called to report that his wife repeatedly rammed his car with hers causing moderate damage to his vehicle. The incident was initially reported as a hit and run collision, however charges of malicious destruction of property against the woman are under investigation.

September 26th:

Arundel Road at Chillum Road: M/V collision – 11am. The driver of a 1991 Mazda was proceeding through the intersection on a green light. The driver of a 1998 Dodge Caravan failed to stop for the opposing red light and struck the Mazda in the intersection. The driver of the van was issued the appropriate citations.

3249 Rhode Island Avenue: Theft from auto – 12:30pm. The owner of a 1995 Ford F150 came into the police station to report that someone had stolen the rear tag off his vehicle. The owner said that he last saw the tag on his truck while he was in Montgomery County on the 25th. He noticed that it was missing this morning while in Mount Rainier.

2900 block of Allison Street: Burglary – 6:35pm. The resident told officers that she locked and secured her apartment this morning at about 8am. When she returned this evening she discovered that her bedroom had been ransacked and some of her jewelry and a quantity of cash were missing. There were no signs of forced entry into the apartment. The officers learned that the resident did not engage the entry door deadbolt when she left this morning; and, from prior investigations the officers are aware that the bottom lock can be defeated without leaving much evidence.

September 25th:

3500 block of Shepherd Street: Burglary – 3:10pm. Officers investigating the burglary determined that entry into the house was accomplished through a rear basement door. The resident responded and told officers that a significant amount of her jewelry had been stolen. PGPD detectives responded to assist with evidence collection and the follow-up investigation.

Further investigation revealed that there were drugs in the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle told the officers that the drugs were medicine that had been prescribed for him. The CDS was seized and the officers told the driver that he needed to produce a valid prescription for the CDS within 48 hours or they would apply for a warrant charging him with possession of illegal narcotics.

Crime Prevention Tip: Car Alarms

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage. So, the next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed when you retire for the night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone tries to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, within a few se...
