The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.
September 14th:
3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 11:50am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a public place.
2700 block of Webster Street: Warrant service – 4:15pm. Officers stopped a 1995 Nissan Maxima for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had an open arrest warrant through Montgomery County for driving on a suspended license. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. His vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.
September 13th:
2400 block of Chillum Road: Traffic – 1:35am. Officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. As the officers approached the vehicle they smelled the odor of PCP coming from inside. All three occupants were removed from the vehicle for officer safety and a Hyattsville PD K-9 unit responded to search the vehicle for CDS. The dog did not locate any CDS inside. The driver was issued two traffic citations and he and his passengers were sent on their way.
3300 block of Chillum Road: Vandalism – 9:20am. The resident told officers that she was awakened by someone banging on her front door at about 1:20am this morning. She checked through the door’s peep hole to see who the person was, but whoever was there was gone. When she went outside this morning she noticed several dents in the door.
3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation/trespassing – 3:10pm. Officers on patrol observed a man drinking an alcoholic beverage. They stopped the man and identified him as one who had been cited for the violation and for loitering several days prior. He was arrested, charged with drinking in public and loitering and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.
4200 block of 28th Street: Vandalism to auto – 4pm. The owner of a 2003 Nissan Maxima told officers that he parked his vehicle secure and undamaged at about 3:30pm. When he returned to the vehicle about a half hour later he discovered that there was a crack in the left rear fender.
September 12th:
4100 block of 31st Street: Vehicle theft – 2:45am. The owner of a 1999 Jeep Cherokee and a 2004 Acura MDX told officers that he looked outside to check on his vehicles and discovered that both had been stolen. He said that he parked and locked his Jeep at about 1am and that the keys to the Acura were in the Jeep’s glove compartment. Officers believe that those responsible broke into the Jeep with the intent to steal it and stole the Acura after finding the keys in the glove box. No evidence was recovered at the scene.
3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Vandalism to auto – 1:20pm. The owner of a 2012 Toyota told officers that he parked his vehicle secure and undamaged at about 11am this morning. When he returned to the vehicle at about 1:20pm he discovered that someone had broken out the rear passenger side window. No evidence was recovered and nothing was stolen from on or inside the vehicle.
4600 block of 27th Street: Warrant service – 8:45pm. Officers stopped a man for drinking an alcoholic beverage in public. Further investigation revealed that he had an open arrest warrant for possession of a controlled dangerous substance. He was issued a criminal citation for the alcohol violation, arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.
3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: M/V Collision – 10:30pm. The owner/operator of a 1998 Toyota Camry was stopped at the stop light and was struck in the rear by the driver of a 2013 Chevy Cruz. There was minor damage to the Toyota; however a 9-year old child who was sitting in the back seat had to be transported to Children’s Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The driver of the Chevy Cruz was issued the appropriate state traffic citations.
September 11th:
3700 block of 34th Street: Theft from auto – 7:45am. The owner of a 2004 Nissan Armada told officers that sometime between 11:45pm last night and the time he called police someone smashed out the vehicle’s rear passenger side window and stole a laptop and a GPS unit from inside.
3100 block of Windom Road: Burglary – 3:20pm. Officers responded for the report of someone breaking into a vacant house. When they arrived they saw a man trying to escape out of the back of the house. He was apprehended, and once in custody the officers learned that he was a former resident of the home and a relative of the owner. He was arrested, charged with burglary and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.
4200 block of Russell Avenue: Vehicle impound – 11pm. Officers patrolling with an automatic license plate reader were alerted to a 2006 Hyundai that had a suspended registration with an MSP pick up order for the tags. Once the information was verified officers seized the tags for return to MVA and impounded the vehicle.
September 10th:
3600 block of Perry Street: Criminal citation – 10:40am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking an alcoholic beverage in a public place.
3700 block of 33rd Street: Traffic – 5:30pm. Officers stopped a 2004 Toyota Camry for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the tags affixed to the vehicle actually belonged on the owner’s 1999 Pontiac, and the Toyota was not registered. The tags were seized and the vehicle was impounded.
September 9th:
3700 block of 34th Street: Vandalism to auto – 6:50am. The owner of a 1993 Honda told officers that she came out to her vehicle this morning and discovered that the passenger mirror had been shattered. No evidence or witnesses could be identified.
3600 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 10:05am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.
3600 block of Bunker Hill Road: Theft – 11:35am. Officers were flagged down by a local contractor who said that a black male was taking bike parts from the Bike Co-op and yelling about shooting someone. Officers located and stopped the man who was in possession of several bike parts. When the officers attempted to question him he became loud and disorderly and threatened to assault them. After repeated unsuccessful attempts to get the man to calm down he was arrested, charged accordingly and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.
September 8th:
2700 block of Arundel Road: Traffic – 12:45pm. Officers stopped a 2000 Dodge Durango for an equipment violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a valid license. He was issued the appropriate traffic citations and his vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.
3100 block of Varnum Street: 2nd degree assault – 12:55pm. Officers responded for the report of unknown trouble. When they arrived they encountered a man and woman engaged in a child custody dispute. The dispute had turned physical when the man assaulted the woman. She victim sustained visible but minor injuries and refused medical attention. The man was arrested, charged with 2nd degree domestic assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.
4200 block of 28th Street: Recovered stolen auto – 4pm. Officers were notified by DC police that their officers recovered a 1998 Nissan Maxima stolen from the 4200 block of 28th Street on September 7th. No arrests were made and the owner was notified of the recovery.
3500 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Traffic – 7pm. Officers stopped a 2001 Chevy van for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a valid license. He was issued the appropriate traffic citations and his vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.
