Police Report: December 1-7

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

December 7th:

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Missing person – 8am. Officers responded to take a report of a missing sixteen year old boy. Prior to the officers’ completing the report the boy returned home safe and sound.

December 6th:

4100 block of Rainier Avenue: Stolen vehicle – 8:35am. The owner of a 2002 Ford van told officers that he parked his vehicle outside his residence last night at about 10:30pm. When he returned to the van this morning he discovered that it had been stolen. No evidence or witnesses were identified.

3100 block of Chillum Road (7-11): Theft – 12:10pm. The victim told officers that after making a purchase he mistakenly left his wallet on the sales counter. When he realized it he went back to the store but found that his wallet had been stolen. Officers and employees reviewed the security camera footage and saw that a man standing in line behind the victim had stolen the wallet. A search of the area for the suspect proved negative. The victim was told to contact his bank and credit card companies to report the theft.

December 5th:

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Vandalism to auto – 6:45am. The owner of a 2008 Hyundai Tuscan told officers that sometime between 8pm on the 4th and the time he called police someone smashed out a small rear quarter window on his vehicle. The victim said that no entry into the vehicle was made and nothing had been stolen. No evidence or witnesses could be identified.

2300 block of Arundel Road: Criminal citation – 1:35pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

4400 block of 28th Place: Vehicle impound – 2pm. Officers patrolling with a mobile license plate reader were alerted to a 1995 Nissan Maxima that had registration plates that expired in November of 2012. The expiration was verified and the vehicle was impounded.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 3:05pm. Officers issued a woman a criminal citation for drinking an alcoholic beverage in a public place.

4200 block of 28th Street: Property damage – 4:50pm. The resident told officers that he left his residence at about 2pm on November 30th. When he returned this afternoon he discovered that one of the basement windows had been broken out. Nothing was reported stolen and no other damage was identified.

4300 block of 28th Street: Theft from auto – 5:20pm. The owner of a 2008 GMC told officers that he parked hi work van at about 4:45pm yesterday. When he returned to the van this afternoon he discovered that someone had broken into the van through the side door and stole several of his tools from inside. The victim had the serial numbers for the stolen items and all were entered into NCIC. No evidence or witnesses were identified.

2310 Varnum Street (7-11): Assault/damage to property – 7:15pm. The store clerk told officers that a man came into the store and attempted to make a small purchase with a $100 bill. When the clerk told the man that he could not make change for the large bill the man became upset and started to yell and curse at the clerk. The man then proceeded to throw merchandise off of the counter at the clerk and pushed the lottery machine off the counter onto the floor. The man left the store and got into a waiting four-door sedan and fled the area. The clerk described the man as a black male with dreads; 25-30 years of age; about 6’ tall and 180 lbs.; wearing a gray t-shirt and a black jacket. The incident is still under investigation.

December 4th:

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Traffic – 12:10am. Officers stopped a 1998 Ford Expedition for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the truck’s registration was suspended, there was an MSP pick up order for the tags and the driver’s license was suspended.  The driver was issued several traffic citations, the tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 3:05pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking an alcoholic beverage in a public place.

December 3rd:

3300 block of Chillum Road: Traffic – 8:30am. Officers stopped a 1997 Honda prelude for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license. He was issued several traffic citations and his vehicle was impounded.

3300 block of Chillum Road: Recovered property – 9am. Officers discovered a large quantity of abandoned property under the bridge over the creek. Officers suspect that the property may be related to a crime and it was recovered and delivered to the MRPD property/evidence room for safekeeping pending further investigation.

2700 block of Arundel Road: Warrant service – 12pm. Officers stopped a man who was riding a moped on the sidewalk. Further investigation revealed that he had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for malicious destruction of property. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

2200 block of Varnum Street: Theft – 3:25pm. Officers responded to the Dollar Store for the report of a theft. The store clerk told the officers that a black male entered the store and took a white plastic bag out of his pocket. He proceeded to fill the bag with various items and walked out without paying for them. Officers canvassed the area for the suspect with negative results.

35th and Perry Streets: Criminal citation – 4:35pm. Officers issued a woman a criminal citation for urinating in public.

3800 block of 35th Street: Disorderly – 4:30pm. Officers on patrol stopped to speak with a man who was disorderly and disturbing passersby. Officers discovered that the man was intoxicated and attempts to get him to calm down and leave the area were unsuccessful. He was arrested and transported to DOC in Hyattsville where he was processed, issued a criminal citation for disorderly conduct and released.

December 2nd:

4400 block of 28th Place: Vehicle impound – 9:45am. Officers on patrol observed a 1995 Chrysler that was displaying expired tags. The vehicle was issued a parking citation and impounded for safekeeping.

2700 block of Arundel Road: Burglary9:30pm. The resident told officers that he had been away from his apartment since about 5am on December 1st. When he returned home this evening he discovered that several items of his personal property including two game consoles and his work tools had been stolen. There were no signs of forced entry into the apartment and the victim said that he is the only resident and the only one with a key. No evidence or witnesses could be identified.

December 1st:

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Vehicle impound – 11am. Officers patrolling with an automatic license plate reader received an alert on a 1998 Toyota Camry with suspended registration plates and a pick up order for the tags. The vehicle was impounded and the tags removed for return to MVA.

4300 block of Russell Avenue: Theft from auto (supplement) – 1pm. Officers received word from PGPD that one of their officers recovered two license plates that were stolen from a 1998 Plymouth Neon back on October 9th. The tags were recovered in the 800 block of Largo Center Drive in Upper Marlboro. No arrests were made.

2900 block of Bunker Hill Road: Returned missing person – 6:55pm. The mother of a 17 year old boy reported that her son, who she had originally reported missing back on November 24th, had returned home safely and in good health. Apparently his “other options” didn’t work out too well. His information was removed from NCIC.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
