Police Report: November 24-30

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

November 30th:

35th and Perry Streets: Motor vehicle collision – 2:40am. Officers responded for the report of a single vehicle collision. When they arrived they discovered that a 2010 Toyota Rav 4 left the roadway and struck a utility pole. The driver of the vehicle did not have a valid license and was issued several traffic citations. The vehicle was not drivable after the collision and was impounded.

2700 block of Queens Chapel Road: Vehicle impound – 3pm. Officers patrolling with an automatic license plate reader received an alert on a 2005 Scion with suspended registration plates and a pick up order for the tags. The vehicle was impounded and the tags removed for return to MVA.

One of the suspects grabbed the victim from behind while the other approached from the front. The suspect in front of the victim had his hand in a hooded sweatshirt pocket implying that he had a handgun. He demanded the victim’s property. The suspects then stole the victim’s cell phone and backpack and fled the area in an unknown direction. The victim was unable to provide a description of the suspect that grabbed him from behind. The suspect that implied he had a weapon was described as a black male of thin build, close shaven, 25-35 years of age, about 6’2” tall and 160lbs., wearing a dark color hooded sweatshirt. The victim was not injured and a search of the surrounding area for the suspects proved negative.

2900 block of Bunker Hill Road: Missing person – The mother of a 17 year old boy told officers that on November 24th at about 7am her son told her that “I have other options” and left her residence. She has not seen or heard from him since that time. The mother said that this was not the first time her son has run away from home. The boy’s information was entered into NCIC missing persons files.

November 26th:

Rhode Island Avenue and 34th Street: MV collision – 7:05pm. The driver of a 2005 Ford truck failed to yield the right of way to a 1998 Honda Accord that was already in the traffic circle. The two vehicles collided causing non-disabling damage to both.

Crime Prevention Tip: Car Alarms

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage. So, the next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed when you retire for the night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone tries to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, within a few se...
