Police Report: February 23 - March 1

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

March 1st:

2500 block of Arundel Road: Traffic – 10:15am. Officers stopped a 2002 Lincoln Navigator for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had no license and his privileges were suspended for a prior DWI. He was issued several State traffic citations and his vehicle was impounded.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Criminal citation – 11:35am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.    

3800 block of 34th Street: Strong arm robbery – 3pm. Officers were flagged down by the owner of the Alife corner store. The owner told the officers that one of his employees had been robbed at about 10am this morning. Further investigation revealed that a black male came into the store and took a dozen microwaveable noodle packages from the shelves and proceeded to walk out of the store. The employee on duty attempted to stop the suspect whereupon the suspect struck the employee in the upper right shoulder before leaving the store. The employee recognized the suspect because he frequents the store sometimes 2-3 times a day. Officers searched the area for the suspect with negative results. On March 2nd MRPD officers were able to locate the suspect. The store employee was able to positively identify his as the man who robbed him. As a result officers have applied for a criminal arrest warrant charging the suspect with various crimes.

February 28th:

4300 block of Russell Avenue: Suicide – 7:30pm. Family members returning home discovered the body of a 29 year old man who was suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot. Fire/rescue personnel responded to the scene and pronounced the man dead. PGPD Homicide Unit detectives and the Medical Examiner responded and confirmed that the man died as the result of the self-inflicted gunshot and no foul play was involved.  The family made arrangements with a local funeral home to take custody of the body for final arrangements.

February 27th:

3300 block of Chillum Road (7-11): Trespassing/attempt theft – 9:10am. The store manager told officers that a juvenile came into the store and filled his backpack with several items. The juvenile then came to the register to pay for just a couple things. The store manger asked the juvenile to take the rest of the stuff out of his backpack. The juvenile complied with the manager’s request and was cooperative. The manager notified the police of the incident to have it documented. The juvenile was advised against trespassing at the location.

3100 block of Bunker Hill Road: Vehicle impound – 11:30am. Officers impounded a 1990 Nissan 240SX for displaying registration plates that expired in 2012. The tags were seized for return to MVA.

4300 block of Kaywood Drive: Trespassing – 2:05pm. Officers on patrol observed an individual known to them as having been warned previously about trespassing on the property. They were able to stop him in the 2300 block of Varnum Street after the subject fled jumping several fences in attempt to avoid the officers. When officers got the subject stopped he was found to be highly intoxicated and very uncooperative. He was subsequently arrested, charged with trespassing and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3300 block of Rhode island Avenue: Criminal citation – 8pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

Russell Avenue and Kaywood Drive: Hit and run collision – 11pm. The driver of a 2010 Chevy Cobalt told officers that she was driving down Russell Avenue and slowed down in an attempt to locate a parking spot. As she slowed an unidentified SUV passed her at a high rate of speed, collided with her vehicle’s front fender and fled the area without making any attempt to stop. The victim was not injured in the collision.

February 26th:

2300 block of Varnum Street: Warrant service – 1:35pm. Officers received information from that a juvenile subject wanted for robbery was seen in the area. Officers searched the area and located the juvenile. The warrant was confirmed and he was arrested, processed and delivered to the custody of the State youth detention facility in Cheltenham.

February 25th:

3300 block of Queens Chapel Road: Warrant service – 1am. On January 31st officers took a man into custody for an emergency medical evaluation. The man was in possession of a vial of liquid PCP at the time of the incident. The officers later obtained a criminal arrest warrant for the man charging him with possession of the illegal drug. At about 1am this morning officers located the man and arrested him on the open warrant. He was delivered to the custody of DOC without incident.

2900 block of Allison Street: Criminal citation/recovered missing person – 9:55am. Officers responded for the report of several individuals trespassing and sleeping in a laundry room. When the officers arrived they located and detained four males. Further investigation revealed that two of the males had been previously warned against trespassing on the property. They were each issued criminal citations for trespassing. A third male was issued a trespass warning notice. The fourth male was identified as a missing runaway juvenile. He was issued a trespass warning notice, taken into custody and released to the custody of his mother.

February 24th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 2:05pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for loitering in an area where he had previously been issued a loitering warning notice.

February 23rd:

2400 block of Arundel Road: Vandalism to auto – 7:30am. The owner of a 2011 Honda Accord told officers that sometime between 3am on the 22nd and the time he called police someone had keyed the side of his vehicle from the front door to the rear quarter panel.

3800 block of 31st Street: Traffic – 8:35am. Officers stopped a black 2005 Chevy Tahoe for running a stop sign. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a valid license. The officers also learned that the driver had been stopped and cited for driving without a license two weeks prior. The driver was arrested, charged with driving without a license and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. The vehicle was impounded.

2400 block of Arundel Road: Vandalism to auto – 9:25am. The owner of a 2013 Toyota Camry told officers that sometime between 3pm on the 22nd and the time he called police someone had keyed the side of his vehicle from the front door to the rear quarter panel.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Attempt theft from auto – 10am. The owner of a 1995 Toyota Corolla showed officers where sometime between 2pm on the 22nd and the time he called police someone tried to steal the front license plate off his vehicle. In the process, the suspect(s) damaged the mounting bracket and tag to the point where it was not repairable.

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road: Theft from auto – 3:30pm. The victim told officers that she had just finished pumping gas and walked over to the teller to pay for the fuel. Upon returning to her vehicle she observed that her passenger side window had been smashed out and her purse was missing from the passenger side floor board. The victim stated that she did not see anyone at her vehicle or hear the window break; however she did report seeing a silver Chrysler 300 pull close to her vehicle and exit the parking lot of the gas station going north bound on Queens Chapel Road in the same time frame.

4000 block of 31st Street: Theft – 7:30pm. The victim told officers that he left four skateboards on his front porch at about 6pm on the 16th. On the 22nd he noticed that they were no longer there. Early in the morning on the 23rd he observed a juvenile walking down the street with a skateboard that he recognized as his. The victim stopped the juvenile and asked him where he got the skateboard. The juvenile said that he found it on a nearby street.  The juvenile gave the board back to the victim. 

2300 block of Varnum Street: Traffic – 11:25pm. Officers stopped a 2005 Mercedes for an equipment violation (headlight out). Further investigation revealed that the driver’s license was suspended and the vehicle’s registration was suspended as well. The driver was charged with several traffic violations and the vehicle was impounded.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. H1N1 Influenza Information

With the outbreak of the H1N1 flu virus now affecting residents across the United States, and the possibility that some Maryland residents may have been infected with the disease, the Mayor & Council along with the MRPD deemed it wise to let Mount Rainier residents know of precautions that individuals should take in order to minimize the possibility of being infected by this virus.
