Police Report: October 12-18

October 18th:

2400 block of Arundel Road: Vehicle impound – 8:40am. Officers impounded a 2002 Suzuki after an ALPR alert indicated that the vehicle’s registration was suspended and there was a pick up order for the tags.

3200 block of Chillum Road: Vehicle impound – 2:40pm. Officers impounded a 1995 Toyota after an ALPR alert indicated that the vehicle’s registration was suspended and there was a pick up order for the tags.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Disorderly conduct – 11:05pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for disorderly conduct.

October 17th:

4700 block of 27th Street: Traffic – 11am. Officers stopped a 2007 Honda Civic for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle’s registration was suspended as was the driver’s license. The tags were removed for return to MVA, the vehicle was impounded and the driver was issued the necessary traffic citations.

4100 block of Russell Avenue: Natural death – 12:10pm. Officers responded with fire/rescue personnel to a report of a 76 year old female who was in medical distress. Fire/rescue personnel treated the woman but she could not be resuscitated and was pronounced deceased. No foul play is evident or suspected and the State Medical Examiner responded to conduct the necessary investigation.

35th Street and Bunker Hill Road: Hit and run collision – 7pm. The owner of a 2004 BMW motorcycle reported that on October 10th a vehicle backed into his motorcycle knocking it over. The owner’s wife observed the incident and advised that the striking vehicle was a white sedan.

4600 block of 27th Street: Stolen vehicle (supplement) – 11pm. Officers were notified by communications personnel that the2004 Honda Odyssey that was reported stolen on October 16th was repossessed, not stolen.

October 16th:

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Traffic – 12:30am. Officers stopped a 2014 BMW X5 after observing the driver talking on a handheld cell phone. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license and was under the influence of alcohol. He failed the standard field sobriety testing and was arrested. He was charged with DUI and several other traffic violations; and he was issued a criminal citation for having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle.

4300 block of 28th Place: EPS – 5am. Officers responded for the report of a domestic dispute. When they arrived they learned that the victim had been assaulted by another female who was under the influence of alcohol and pain medication. Fire/rescue personnel responded and transported the woman to Washington Adventist Hospital and released her to medical personnel for emergency treatment. The victim was advised of her options with the District Court Commissioner.

4600 block of 27th Street: Stolen vehicle – 8:15am. The owner of a 2004 Honda Odyssey told officers that sometime between 10:45pm last night and the time she called police someone stole her van. No evidence/witnesses were identified.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Theft from auto – 4:40pm. The owner of a 2001 Toyota Solara told officers that sometime between 1pm this afternoon and the time she called police someone stole the front license plate off her vehicle.

October 15th:

3800 block of 33rd Street: Sound of shots – 6:40pm. Officers responded for the sound of three shots fired. When they arrived witnesses pointed out the house from where the sound of shots came. The officers searched the area and located a man the roof. Further investigation revealed that the man lived there and that the sound witnesses heard was his banging metal pipes at a raccoon that had eaten through his roof.

October 14th:

4200 block of Russell Avenue: Vehicle impound – 9:30am. Officers impounded a 2002 Jeep Cherokee for displaying expired registration plates.

2700 block of Allison Street: Vandalism to auto – 10:30am. The owner of a 2014 Honda Civic told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning and discovered some small scratches on the front corner of the bumper of his vehicle. Officers could not determine if the scratches were from a vehicle or fixed object and there was no paint transfer.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Traffic – 12:15pm. Officers patrolling with an automatic license plate reader received an alert that the registration on a 1996 Honda Accord was suspended with a pick up order for the tags. Officers stopped the vehicle, issued the driver the appropriate citation, seized the tags for return to MVA and impounded the vehicle.

3000 block of Upshur Street: Attempted fraud – 1:25pm. The reporting person told officers that a man contacted him on the phone, claimed to be with the Federal Department of Education and offered to give him a grant for $8,200. The man asked that the reporting person purchase a $220 prepaid credit card, call him back with the information and then he could processes the check. The reporting person recognizing the scam hung up and called police.

3700 block of 37th Street: Found property – 4:30pm. A woman cleaning out her deceased father’s belongings discovered a very old CS gas canister. Fire/rescue personnel responded and took possession of the canister for destruction.

3100 block of Varnum Street: EPS – 6:20pm. Officers responded for the report of a man who was depressed and possibly suicidal. After interviewing the man and his family members officers determined that he was in need of a psychiatric evaluation. He was voluntarily taken to a local hospital and released to medical personnel.

October 13th:

2700 block of Webster Street: Warrant service – 9:30am. Officers patrolling with an ALPR were alerted to a 2005 Nissan Altima. The alert indicated that the vehicle’s owner had an open arrest warrant for failing to appear in court. The owner was located, arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4100 block of Russell Avenue: Lost property – 11am. A woman called to report that she had lost her wallet. She said she inadvertently left it on the roof of her car when she went into her residence. When she went back to retrieve her wallet it was nowhere to be found.

4300 block of 28th Place: Vehicle impound – 12:15pm. Officers patrolling with an ALPR received an alert on a 2005 Chevy Avalanche that had a suspended registration and a pick up order on the tags. The tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Recovered stolen auto – 5:25pm. Officers received a call that a stolen Dodge Caravan may have been seen by the family member of the victim in the area of Buchanan Street and Chillum Rd. Officers canvassed the area and located the vehicle which had been reported stolen from an address in Bladensburg at about 10pm on October 12th. The victim sent a representative to the scene to take possession of vehicle.

3500 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 10:40pm. Officers out on a traffic stop were approached by a man who said that the vehicle they had stopped was his and he wanted to know what was going on. Officers told the man to return to his vehicle and they would come and speak with him about the stop. The man became very irate, verbally combative and refused to obey the officer’s commands to return to his vehicle. When additional officers arrived on the scene the man calmed down. He was later issued a criminal summons for failing to obey a lawful order and released. The driver of the stopped vehicle was found to be in possession of less than 10 grams of marijuana. He was issued a civil citation for the violation and released.

October 12th:

3800 block of 34th Street: Disorderly conduct – 12:15am. Officers stopped to investigate a vehicle that was parked outside the Alife Market. The vehicle was running, unoccupied and parked in front of a stop sign. As the officers tried to enter the store to locate the driver an intoxicated man blocked the door, became loud and disorderly and shouted obscenities at the officers. When the officers asked him to move he became even louder and more obnoxious with his comments.  The driver of the vehicle returned and the parking ordinance was explained to her. The disorderly man continued to refuse to calm down and leave the area. When the officers moved to arrest him he jumped onto a bicycle and fled the area. Officers pursued the man and he eventually lost control of his bike and collided into a police cruiser.  He tried to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended. He was transported to Washington Adventist Hospital for a checkup and when he was released from the hospital he was transported to DOC in Hyattsville where he was charged and released to their custody.

2300 block of Varnum Street: Citizen robbery – 1:55am. The victim told officers that as he was walking home he was approached by a black male who struck him and stole his jacket and two cell phones. As officers were questioning him about the details of the robbery he became increasingly irate and uncooperative. He stated that he was not going to speak further with the MRPD officers or robbery detectives from PGPD. He told the officers that he no longer needed assistance and walked off towards Eastern Avenue.

2300 block of Varnum Street: Warrant service – 2:30am. Officers stopped a man known to them to have an open arrest warrant for failing to appear in court. The warrant was confirmed and he was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage.
