Police Report: October 5-11

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

October 11th:

34th Street and Bunker Hill Road: Criminal citation – 5:55am. Officers stopped a 2003 Honda minivan for running a stop sign. Further investigation revealed that the driver had an open container of an alcoholic beverage inside the vehicle and within his reach. He was issued a traffic citation for the stop sign violation and a criminal citation for the alcohol violation.

3800 block of 34th Street: Attempted theft/2nd degree assault – 6:30pm. The store clerk told officers that two males came into the store and attempted to steal 10 boxes of candy. The clerk told them to return the candy and leave the store whereupon one of the males brandished a knife and threatened to kill the clerk. The clerk informed them that he was calling the police and they dropped the candy and fled the store. The investigation will continue when officers get access to the store’s video surveillance recording.

October 10th:

One Municipal Place: EPS – 6:35pm. Officers on patrol encountered a man obviously under the influence of PCP. At the officers’ direction fire/rescue personnel responded and transported him to Washington Adventist Hospital where he was released to hospital staff for treatment. 

4600 block of 30th Street: CDS paraphernalia – 10pm. Officers charged a 14 year old juvenile with possession of CDS paraphernalia. He was released to his stepfather pending Juvenile Court action.

3400 block of Eastern Avenue: Theft – 10pm. The victim told officers that sometime between 12:45 this afternoon and the time he called police someone stole two barrel cooking grills, a metal trash bin and several metal tent rods from his back yard. No suspects/witnesses could be identified.

October 9th:

31st and Perry Streets: Theft – 7:25pm. The reporting person told officers that on September 24th at about 6:45pm unknown suspects removed a plastic street barrier, loaded it into the back of a U-Haul truck and fled. The reporting person was unable to provide any suspect information. The incident was documented and under investigation.

4000 block of 35th Street: Domestic – 9:35pm. The reporting person told officers that she had a protective order against her ex-husband and that he has been sending her threatening emails in violation of the order. Officer’s assisted the reporting person in relocating to the court commissioner’s office where she filled for and received a warrant for his arrest.

October 8th:

4600 block of 29th Street: CDS possession – 2am. Officers issued a man a civil citation for possession of less than 10g of marijuana.

2900 block of Allison Street: Vehicle impound – 9am. Officers impounded a 2008 Nissan Altima that was not displaying tags and had a host of other registration issues.

3300 block of Otis Street: Theft from auto – 11:35am. The owner of a 2010 Toyota Corolla told officers that sometime between 10pm on the 7th and the time she called police someone smashed out the front passenger window of her vehicle and stole her wallet. Nothing else was taken from the vehicle.

4000 block of 34th Street: Traffic – 7:05pm. Officers stopped a 2001 VW Golf for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license. He was issued multiple traffic citations and the vehicle was impounded.

3800 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 11:15pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for disorderly conduct.

October 7th:

2700 block of Webster Street: Property damage – 5:25am. The resident told officers that a former girlfriend called and asked to be let into his apartment. When he refused she came by and damaged the front entry door and door frame. She also broke the passenger side rear view mirror and scratched the driver’s door of his vehicle.

4200 block of 28th Street: Stolen vehicle – 2:25pm. The owner of a 2009 Kawasaki motorcycle told officers that sometime between 2am this morning and the time he called police someone stole his bike. He said that he secured the motorcycle with a front wheel lock when he parked it in front of his apartment building. No evidence/witnesses could be identified.

4300 block of Kaywood Drive: Theft from auto – 6pm. The owner of a 2002 Ford Expedition told officers that on October 3rd her daughter returned her vehicle to her. She later discovered several items of her personal property missing from inside the vehicle.

4300 block of 28th Place: Property damage – 7:40pm. The owner of a 2012 Nissan Altima told officers that he parked his vehicle in a space next to a burgundy sedan with 2 to 3 male subjects standing around it. As he walked to his building he heard a scraping sound and saw the sedan speeding off towards Arundel Road. He checked his vehicle and found the front bumper had been damaged. The owner could not provide additional details about the sedan or its driver/occupants.

3800 block of 35th Street: Criminal citation – 9:25pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for disorderly conduct.

October 6th:

3800 block of 35th Street: Traffic – 1:05am. Officers stopped a 2002 Nissan Quest for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a driver’s license. He was issued several traffic citations and released. His vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.

4300 block of 28th Place: Lost property – 4:30pm. The reporting person told officers that she last her cell phone on October 4th while getting out of her car. She was unsuccessful in trying to locate her phone using the Find My Phone app.

4300 block of Kaywood Drive: Criminal citation – 10:25pm. A woman called to report that there was a man at her front door masturbating. When officers responded they located and arrested him. He was transported to DOC in Hyattsville, processed, charged with indecent conduct by criminal citation and released.

October 5th:

3200 block of Chillum Road: Theft from auto – 2pm. The owner of a 1995 Honda Accord told officers that sometime between midnight last night and the time he called police someone threw a piece of concrete through the driver’s door window and stole an iPad and a stereo face plate from inside.

2800 block of Upshur Street: Vandalism – 7:50pm. The homeowners told officers that their tenant just moved out of the house. The owners discovered damage to the house that they need to have documented. They also wanted to know their options for pursing charges against the tenants. Offices assisted and documented the incident.

Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi

Police Report: June 9-10

June 9th : 2500 block of Allison Street : At about 1 pm officers took a report of a citizen robbery . The victim told the officers and PGPD robbery detectives that she arrived to meet a client when she was approached by two black males. One of the men approached her from the front; the second came up behind her and placed her in a head lock. The second man demanded the keys to her gold 2005 Honda Accord (MD tags 9FA Y36). The victim complied and the two got into her car and fled the scene. The victim described her assailants as black males about 19-20 years of age. The first man was about 5’8” tall with shoulder length dreadlocks and was wearing a white t-shirt, long jean shorts, white socks and tennis shoes. The second man was about 5’10” tall, also had shoulder length dreadlocks and was wearing a white navy hat. Boston Marathon/West, Texas Spam Campaigns

There is a new spam campaign in circulation using the Boston Marathon bombings that occurred on April 15, 2013 as a lure. Users are sent an e-mail encouraging them to a watch a video of the explosion. When the user clicks on the enclosed link to watch the video malware is installed on the user’s computer.   The following URL patterns have been found in these e-mails: http://[IP-address]/boston.html   http://[IP-address]/news.html   When the user clicks on one of the links the Kehlios worm is installed on the user’s system which has the capacity to send spam; carry out Distributed Denial of Service Attacks; and steal online currency such as bitcoins. Most major anti-virus vendors have signatures for detecting this malware so users should keep their antivirus programs up-to-date.   In addition to the Boston Marathon spam campaign, a West, Texas plant explosion spam campaign has also sprung up.
