Police Report: June 21-27

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

June 27th:

3100 block of Chillum Road (7-11): Theft – 12:15am. Officers learned that a large party had just been broken up in Hyattsville. The group walked to the 7-11, entered the business and started selecting merchandise. All the suspects fled the store without making any attempt to pay for the merchandise.

3100 block of Webster Street: Property damage – 5:30pm. The owner of a 2006 Mercury told officers that a tree in the tree box fell on his vehicle during a severe storm. Public Works was notified to assist in removing the tree.

June 26th:

4100 block of 31st Street: Vandalism to auto – 7:45am. The owner of a 2006 Chrysler van told officers that he came out to his vehicle and discovered that someone had broken out a rear driver’s side window.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Loitering warning – 1:50pm. A man known as a habitual problem drinker and loiterer was stopped and issued a loitering warning notice barring him from the property for 30 days.

4000 block of 36th Street: Abduction – 8:50pm. Witnesses told officers that they saw a man forcibly abduct his wife and three children from their home. The wife had an active protection order against her husband. The man and the victims fled the area in a 2001 Honda Odyssey.  Officers assisted by PGPD detectives issued an AMBER Alert and began a search for the suspect. He was located about 12 hours later in Georgia. He was taken into custody by local and federal law enforcement officers. All of the victims were located safe and in good physical condition.

4000 block of 35th Street: Vandalism – 10:20pm. The victims told officers that they were in their house when three black males approached the residence and started to throw rocks at the windows as well as at the victim’s pickup truck parked in the driveway. The suspects broke several windows before fleeing on foot. Officers discovered that the incident is retaliation after the victim assaulted someone known by the suspects. The victim refused to cooperate with the officers and tell the entire story, fill out a statement or provide suspect information.

June 25th:

3400 block of Eastern Avenue: Domestic – 1:30am. Officers assisted a woman in obtaining a protective order against the father of her children. The man was served with the order and escorted off the property.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Domestic – 9:20am. The victim told officers that she and her significant other got into a verbal argument. During the argument the man struck her in the forehead and left their apartment. A domestic violence lethality assessment was completed and the victim spoke with a counselor at the Family Crisis Center. She told officers that she was not interested in filing a protective order against the suspect at this time.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 2:50pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Fraud – 2:50pm. The victim deposited two checks into his bank account at the request of a man who offered hi a job. When he later checked his account he discovered that his account was overdrawn by over $3,000. The victim’s bank is investigating the theft.

4500 block of 32nd Street: Theft – 9:50pm. The resident told officers that he returned home and found that his central air conditioning system wasn’t working. When he went to investigate he discovered that someone had stolen the system’s two air pumps.

June 24th:

Arundel Road and Chillum Road: Traffic – 1:45am. Officers stopped a 2000 Nissan Sentra for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s license was suspended and the vehicle registration was expired. The driver was issued several citations and his vehicle was impounded.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Stolen vehicle – 5:20am. The owner of a 2008 Ford truck told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning and discovered it had been stolen. There were signs of glass breakage where the truck had been parked but no other evidence.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Stolen vehicle (recovered) – 10am. The owner of a 2008 Ford van told officers that he came out to his vehicle at about 5:40am this morning and discovered it had been stolen. Officers took a stolen auto report at that time and the vehicle was entered into NCIC stolen vehicle files. At about 10am PGPD contacted MRPD and advised that they recovered the victim’s vehicle in the 1500 block of Beaver Heights Lane in Capitol Heights. Both tags were still attached and the vehicle was drivable. MRPD officers contacted the victim who stated he would respond to pick up the vehicle from where it was recovered.

4100 block of 32nd Street: Theft from auto – 8:35pm. The owner of a 2005 Toyota told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning and discovered that the interior has been ransacked and approximately $4.00 in spare changed was stolen from the center cup holder. The doors to vehicle were unlocked.

3300 block of Perry Street: Criminal citation -11:45pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4300 block of Russell Avenue: Stolen vehicle – 3:25pm. The owner of a 2008 Honda motorcycle told officers that he came out for his bike this afternoon and discovered that it had been stolen.

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Theft – 4pm. The store clerk told officers that a man made a purchase and waited for customers to leave the store. When the store was empty the man jumped the counter and grabbed approximately 4-5 packs of Newport cigarettes and fled the store on foot out of the store towards DC. On June 25th officer returned to the store and reviewed the store’s security camera footage and identified the suspect. After conducting an inventory check the store manager said that the suspect actually got away with 15 packs of Newport cigarettes with an approximate value of $111.60. Officers applied for and received an arrest warrant for the suspect charging him with the theft.

4200 block of 31st Street: Found property – 6:35pm. Officers participating in a police/community meeting were told by residents of an abandoned bicycle they discovered leaning against their fence. Officers later took possession of the bike for safekeeping. The bike is a maroon/silver Magna Exciter men’s 26-inch full suspension mountain bike.

4000 block of 34th Street (ZZ Pizza): Theft – 8:25pm. A woman was seated in the restaurant talking on her cell phone when she was approached by a man who asked her a vague question and then walked out. About two minutes later two other men came in grabbed her purse and keys off the table and fled outside. The victim observed both suspects jump into a small silver SUV waiting on Bunker Hill Road driven by the first man. The vehicle fled west on Bunker Hill Road. Suspect #1 was described as a black male in his 20’s, approximately 5’ 7” tall, 200 lbs., dark complexion, shaved head, wearing a black T-shirt and grey shorts. Suspect #2 was described as a black male in his 20’s, approximately 6’ 0” tall, 160 lbs., dark complexion, wearing a bright blue T-shirt and a grey fishing style hat. Suspect #3 (driver of the vehicle) was described as only a black male.

3100 block of Chillum Road: Criminal citation – 11:40pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

June 23rd:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 8:30am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Hit and run collision – 11:20am. The owner of a 2012 Freightliner told officers that a person driving a dark blue SUV, possibly a Ford Explorer, collided with the front driver’s side bumper of the tractor and fled the area. Officers found small clear plastic remnants of a broken light from the suspect vehicle on the ground nearby. The suspect vehicle was last seen on the access road northbound towards Queens Chapel Road.

3100 block of Chillum Road: Vandalism – 3:25pm. The store clerk told officers that after a man was refused service he exited the store, broke one of the store’s glass windows with his fist and fled the scene on foot towards Queens Chapel Road.

June 22nd:

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road (Sunoco station): Counterfeit currency – 10:20am. The clerk told officers that a customer attempted to pay for his purchase with a counterfeit bill. The officers spoke with the customer who said that he didn’t know that one of the bills he was using was counterfeit and that he had just received the bill in change at the Checkers restaurant across the street. The suspect was advised that the counterfeit bill was being taken and placed into Mount Rainier Police property. Case

2700 block of Queens Chapel Road: Theft from auto – 10:35am. The owner of a 2011 Honda told officers that she came out to her vehicle this morning and discovered that the front tag had been stolen.

Chauncey Place and Buchanan Street: Hit and run collision – 4pm. The owner of a 2015 Chevy truck told officers that she came out to her vehicle this afternoon and discovered fresh damage to the right rear section of the vehicle. The damage appeared to be consistent with a hit and run collision.

4000 block of 29th Street: Motor vehicle collision – 7:15pm. Officers investigated a motor vehicle collision and learned that a 2011 Nissan Rogue was traveling westbound on Eastern Avenue when it left the roadway, jumped the curb and struck two parked motor vehicles in the parking lot of 4002 29th Street. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle had been stolen earlier from an address in West Hyattsville, but had not yet been reported. PGPD officers responded and documented the stolen and recovery reports on the vehicle. The driver fled the scene after the collision but evidence showed that he/she was injured during the crash.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road (Family Dollar): Theft – 7:30pm. The store clerk told officers that a Hispanic male came into the store and shoplifted approximately $18 worth of merchandise. The clerk described the suspect as 5’5” to 5’6” tall with curly hair wearing blue pants. A canvass of the area for the suspect was negative.

June 21st:

4000 block of 34th Street: Property damage – 2:30am. The property owner reported that the driver of a 2004 Jeep struck his fence while trying to park. Damage was estimated at $500.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Found bicycle – 4:15pm. Officers took custody of a black/silver Trek 3500 Mountain Bike SN: TBI-0106 044A11353 that was found abandoned in the hallway of an apartment building. The bike is stored at the police station for safekeeping.

Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi

Police Report: June 9-10

June 9th : 2500 block of Allison Street : At about 1 pm officers took a report of a citizen robbery . The victim told the officers and PGPD robbery detectives that she arrived to meet a client when she was approached by two black males. One of the men approached her from the front; the second came up behind her and placed her in a head lock. The second man demanded the keys to her gold 2005 Honda Accord (MD tags 9FA Y36). The victim complied and the two got into her car and fled the scene. The victim described her assailants as black males about 19-20 years of age. The first man was about 5’8” tall with shoulder length dreadlocks and was wearing a white t-shirt, long jean shorts, white socks and tennis shoes. The second man was about 5’10” tall, also had shoulder length dreadlocks and was wearing a white navy hat. The officers also discovered a white 2004 Chevrolet Express van that is believed to have been driven to the scene by the two suspects. A check of the vehicle’s registration

Boston Marathon/West, Texas Spam Campaigns

There is a new spam campaign in circulation using the Boston Marathon bombings that occurred on April 15, 2013 as a lure. Users are sent an e-mail encouraging them to a watch a video of the explosion. When the user clicks on the enclosed link to watch the video malware is installed on the user’s computer.   The following URL patterns have been found in these e-mails: http://[IP-address]/boston.html   http://[IP-address]/news.html   When the user clicks on one of the links the Kehlios worm is installed on the user’s system which has the capacity to send spam; carry out Distributed Denial of Service Attacks; and steal online currency such as bitcoins. Most major anti-virus vendors have signatures for detecting this malware so users should keep their antivirus programs up-to-date.   In addition to the Boston Marathon spam campaign, a West, Texas plant explosion spam campaign has also sprung up.
