Police Report: June 7-13

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

June 13th:

Nothing significant to report.

June 12th:

4200 block of 34th Street: Death – 12:20pm. Officers responded to Washington Adventist Hospital for a death report. The officers learned that EMS personnel responded for an unresponsive man and immediately transported him to the hospital where he later died.  The cause of death was not immediately apparent however the man was suffering from medical problems and was found to have a laceration to his forehead. PGPD homicide and the coroner’s office responded and are conducting their own investigation into the cause of death.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 8pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possessing an open container of an alcoholic beverage.

Buchanan Street and Chillum Road: Hit and run collision – 10pm.  The owner of a 2005 Hyundai told officers that as she was pulling out of the PG Pool when a vehicle entered her lane and struck the front of her vehicle causing minor damage. She followed the striking vehicle for a short period of time and got the license plate information. She went home and contacted police with the information. The incident is still under investigation as officers attempt to locate the owner of the striking vehicle.

June 11th:

2900 block of Arundel Road: Lost property – 6:55pm. A woman came into the police station to report that she had lost her passport, driver’s license and Social Security card. She said that the last time she remembers seeing the documents was on October 25, 2014.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Criminal citation – 7:25pm. Officers issued a woman a criminal citation for urinating in public.

3200 block of Varnum Street: Criminal citation – 11:45pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for disorderly conduct.

June 10th:

2700 block of Upshur Street: Vandalism – 2:50am. Officers responded for the report of two black males vandalizing cars with an object that looked like a bat. Officers located both suspects and recovered evidence that linked them to the crime. They were arrested, charged accordingly and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4100 block of 31st Street: Stolen vehicle (recovered) – 6:30am. The owner of a 2002 Chevy reported that his vehicle had been stolen from his driveway. A short time later the officers were notified by PGPD that the vehicle had been recovered from a creek in the southern area of the County. The vehicle was unoccupied at the time of the recovery and no arrests were made. The owner was notified of the recovery.

4700 block of 27th Street: Theft – 8:45am. The manager of the Queens Manor Apartments reported that over the course of June 1st through the 10th someone stole approximately $10,000 in checks and money orders from the overnight payment drop box. It appeared as though those responsible were able to use a stick to gain access to the box and its contents.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: MIR – 10am. Officers responded for the report of an individual being robbed. Witnesses said that three black males knocked the victim off a bicycle and went through his pockets looking for valuables. Officers located, stopped and identified the three suspects but were unable to locate the alleged victim. The incident was documented pending further investigation if a victim notifies police. 

3249 Rhode Island Avenue: Attempt stolen auto – 8pm. Officers preparing for duty discovered that someone had attempted to steal an unmarked police vehicle parked in the rear lot of the police station. The officers observed that the driver’s side door lock had been damaged and was laying on the ground; the ignition and steering column had been damaged; and the glove box had been ransacked.

June 9th:

4100 block of Rainier Avenue: Missing person – 5:25pm. A parent told officers that her son did not return home from school at his usual time. A search for the child ensued and he was located safe and unharmed in an apartment in the 4000 block of 36th Street.

Kaywood Drive and Kaywood Place: Hit and run collision – 5:45pm. The victim told officers that he came out to his vehicle this evening and discovered damage to the front driver’s side of his vehicle. No information was available on the striking vehicle.

3200 block of Buchanan Street: Stolen vehicle – 6pm. The owner of a 1996 Honda Accord told officers that he came out to his vehicle this evening and discovered that it had been stolen.

3500 block of 37th Street: Theft – 7:20pm. The caretaker of a private residence was notified by a neighbor that the back gate was open. When the caretaker checked the property he discovered that the home’s air conditioning unit had been stolen. Officers spoke with the property owner who is currently living and working out of state and notified her of the theft.

June 8th:

3700 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 9:10am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of alcohol in public.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Recovered stolen vehicle – 4:40pm.  Officers were notified by Hyattsville PD that their officers recovered a 2002 Dodge in the 3500 block of East West Highway that was reported stolen from an address on Buchanan Street back on April 21st. The vehicle was recovered with both tags attached and it is drivable.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Theft – 2:55PM. The victim told officers that she left her cell phone on the counter while she handled some work related matters. When she returned to use the phone she discovered that it had been stolen.

4200 block of Russell Avenue: Theft – 6:20pm. The victim told officers that she ordered a 50 inch TV from Walmart which was delivered by FEDEX. She said that her brother gave permission for the TV to be left at the door. When the victim came home she discovered that the TV had been stolen.

4200 block of Russell Avenue: Burglary – 8:10pm. The resident told officers that she left home at about 9:30am. When she returned at about 8pm she discovered that her apartment had been ransacked. There was no sign of forced entry and the victim said that nothing appears to have been stolen.

June 7th:

4600 block of 30th Street: Domestic – 1:15am. Officers responded for the report of a violent domestic assault in progress. When they arrived they saw two women engaged in a physical altercation. The two were separated and officers identified the primary aggressor in the assault. She was arrested, charged with 2nd degree domestic assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. A lethality assessment was completed and the victim was put in touch with counselors via phone.

2900 block of Allison Street: Domestic – 3:20am. Officers met with the victim at the police station and she told them of a domestic incident that had occurred earlier in the day. She was transported to the Commissioner’s office in Hyattsville where a criminal summons was issued for the man who had assaulted her.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. H1N1 Influenza Information

With the outbreak of the H1N1 flu virus now affecting residents across the United States, and the possibility that some Maryland residents may have been infected with the disease, the Mayor & Council along with the MRPD deemed it wise to let Mount Rainier residents know of precautions that individuals should take in order to minimize the possibility of being infected by this virus.
