In
June 2015, 9 U.S. law enforcement officers tragically lost their lives in the
line-of-duty, bringing the year-to-date total to 63. The average age of those
killed in June was 39, and the average tour of duty was approximately 20 years
on-the-job. Two officers had less than 2 years of experience on-the-job, and
both were killed in vehicle-related incidents. Even with the untimely deaths of
these two young officers, the fact that the average age of those killed in June
was 39 and the average tour of duty was roughly 20 years demonstrates that
seasoned officers continue to be vulnerable while on-duty.
