Police Report: June 28 - July 4

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

July 4th:

3100 block of Arundel Road: Traffic – 9:20pm. Officers stopped a 2005 Nissan for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle’s tags were expired, the driver did not have a license and there were open alcoholic beverage containers in the vehicle’s center console. The driver was issued several citations and the vehicle was impounded.

4500 block of 32nd Street: Vandalism – 9:35pm. The resident told officers that he was watching TV when he heard a loud explosion in front of his house. When he went to investigate he discovered that someone had thrown an ACE fire extinguisher at his front door damaging the metal barriers. No suspects were identified.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: MIR – 9:50pm. Officers responded for the report of an alleged robbery. Upon arrival and after further investigation it was determined that no robbery had been committed rather two individuals and a taxi driver got into an argument because the driver refused to accept a credit card as payment. The driver was ultimately paid for the fare and all parties were sent on their way.

July 3rd:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 8am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for loitering. He had been previously cited for violating a loitering warning notice barring him from the area for 30 days.

2200 block of Varnum Street: Hit and run collision – 9:30pm. The owner of a 2012 Chrysler told officers that he observed a small black vehicle strike his parked vehicle then flee the area. No additional identifying information was found.

3700 block of Bunker Hill Road: Burglary – 10:40pm. The reporting person told officers that she left her apartment for about an hour and a half. When she returned she discovered a bedroom window open and a closet in the master bedroom ransacked. She also discovered that a handgun and its 10-round magazine had been stolen. The firearm was entered into NCIC as stolen. The scene was processed and latent prints were recovered from the window area and submitted to RAFIS for examination.

July 2nd:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 8:30am. Officers patrolling the area observed a subject loitering who they have cited three separate times over the last week. Officers stopped the subject again and issued him another criminal citation for the infraction.

One Municipal Place: MIR – 9:10 to 9:25am.  Officers observed three individuals known from previous encounters to loiter at the bus stop for extended periods of time and consume alcoholic beverages. All three individuals were issued a loitering warning notice and sent on their way.

4200 block of 34th Street: Hit and run collision – 2:25pm. The owner of a 2009 Dodge Journey told officers that sometime between 12:15 and 12:30pm an unidentified vehicle struck his causing damage to the rear driver’s side. No suspect information was identified.

July 1st:

3100 block of Bunker Hill Road: Burglary – 1:45pm. The resident told officers that he returned home to find that someone had broken a front window and gained access to his residence. The suspect(s) then stole several musical instruments and electronics from the home. PGPD detectives responded and assisted in processing the scene for evidence and are assisting with the investigation.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 8:55pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

June 30th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 12:30am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4200 block of Russell Avenue: Vehicle impound – 2am. Officers impounded a Toyota for displaying tags that expired in May of 2015.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Death report – 8am. Officers responded to assist EMS personnel with an unresponsive man. When the officers arrived they learned that the man had been pronounced dead. The decedent had been treated and released at MedStar Hospital Center on the 28th but continued to have medical issues. The State medical examiner responded and determined that there was no foul play and, due to the decedent’s medical history, no further investigation was warranted. The ME authorized the release the decedent’s remains to the family for final arrangements.

3100 block of Arundel Road: M/V collision – 10:40am. Officers investigating the collision found that one of the vehicles involved sustained disabling damage and had to be towed from the scene. There were no injuries reported.

4500 block of 29th Street: Theft from auto – 4:05pm. The victim told officers that she was unloading groceries from her vehicle and mistakenly left her purse unattended inside. When she went back for her purse she discovered it had been stolen. There were no witnesses identified and the vehicle was dusted for prints with negative results. 

4500 block of Eastern Avenue: Criminal citation – 9:20pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 9:50pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for trespassing. He had been previously issued a loitering warning notice banning him from the property for 30 days; and, had been issued a citation for trespassing on the 29th.

June 29th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 7:15am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for trespassing. He had been previously issued a loitering warning notice banning him from the property for 30 days.

4400 block of 31st Street: Domestic assault – 9:50am. The victim told officers that her husband beat her and choked her prior to the officers’ arrival; and that this was not the first time he had assaulted her. The present assault was witnessed by other family members. A lethality assessment was completed and the husband was arrested, charged with domestic assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

2700 block of Queens Chapel Road: Vehicle impound – 9:35pm. Officers impounded a 2000 Volvo for displaying tags that expired in December of 2014.

June 28th:

3700 block of 36th Street: 1st degree assault – 12:15am. Officers responded for the report of a man down bleeding. When they arrived they learned that a group of men had been drinking and an argument ensued between two of them. One of the men broke a beer bottle and attacked the other cutting him in the left arm. Officers apprehended the suspect on the scene. Both the suspect and the victim were transported to the hospital for medical treatment. When the suspect was released from the hospital he was charged with first degree assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Upper Marlboro. 

34th Street and Arundel Road: M/V collision – 9:55am. Officers investing a collision learned that a 1997 Honda Civic was traveling north on 34th Street crossing Arundel Road when a 2011 Hyundai failed to stop at the red light striking the Honda. No injuries were reported.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Criminal citation (x2) – 3:45pm. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for drinking in public.

Crime Prevention Tip: Car Alarms

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage. So, the next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed when you retire for the night.
