Police Report: June 12-18

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

 

June 18th:

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Stolen vehicle – 2:30am. The owner of a 2004 Toyota told officers that he parked his vehicle around midnight and when he returned he discovered it had been stolen. He said there was nothing of value in the vehicle. Communications had no record of the vehicle being impounded or repossessed.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 9:45am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4300 block of Kaywood Drive: MIR – 10:05. Officers responded for the report of two individuals smoking CDS in front of an apartment building. When they arrived they noticed a strong odor of marijuana in the air found one of the individuals who said that yes, he had been smoking marijuana and he had just finished. He was no longer in possession of any CDS and was sent on his way.

3700 block of 34th Street: Fraud – 1pm. The victim told officers that he arranged to purchase a used truck he found on Craig’s List from a woman in Texas who identified herself as Monica Harris. The woman requested that payment be made via Amazon gift cards which he purchased and transferred to her. The victim was scammed out of about $7,000 and never received the truck. The victim is working with Amazon’s fraud department and PGPD to try and get some resolution.

4300 block of 28th Place: Vehicle impound – 1:45pm. Officers impounded a 2009 Chevy that had been parked and unmoved for over a month and displaying improper tags.

4300 block of 28th Place: Recovered stolen vehicle – 2:20pm. Officers patrolling the area discovered a 2004 Honda motorcycle that was displaying no tags. Further investigation revealed that it had been reported stolen from an address in Baltimore County. The bike was impounded for safekeeping and Baltimore County PD was notified of the recovery.

4300 block of 28th Place: Vehicle impound – 2:35pm. Officers impounded a 2001 Ford that was displaying tags that expired back in November of 2015.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 5:50pm. Officers patrolling the area stopped to check on several men sleeping at the bus stop. One of the men had been warned previously against such behavior and was cited for failing to obey a lawful order of a police officer.

3400 block of Newton Street: Domestic – 6:40pm. Officers responded at the request of a woman who had a protective order against her daughter’s father and wanted the officers to serve the order. The father was located and the order served without incident.

June 17th:

3800 block of 31st Street: EPS – 10:20am. Officers responded for the report of a man acting erratically. When they arrived they found the man pouring gasoline all over the yard and on himself. The officers immediately recognized that the man was under the influence of a CDS and took him into custody. He was found to be in possession of a syringe and he told the officers that he had “shot up” about 30 minutes prior to their arrival. EMS responded and transported the man to Providence Hospital where he was turned over to the medical staff for treatment.

34th Street and Arundel Road: M/V collision – 4:30pm. Investigation revealed that the driver of a 1999 Lincoln driving north on Arundel Road failed to stop at a red signal and collided with a 1997 Ford going east through the intersection on 34th Street. The collision caused the Ford to strike a 2012 Toyota heading west on 34th Street. The driver of the Lincoln was transported by EMS to Providence Hospital for treatment of non- life threatening injuries and his vehicle was impounded for safekeeping. There were no other injuries.

3500 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 5:40pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3800 block of 34th Street: Theft from auto – 5:40pm. The reporting person told officers that she was looking after a 2007 Toyota that belonged to her fiancé who was out of the country. When she checked on the vehicle this evening she discovered that someone broke into the vehicle through a rear passenger window and stole the car radio out of the center console.  Officers checked for latent prints with negative results.  

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 7:55pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 10:25pm. Officers responded for the report of a man on a bicycle selling CDS. They canvassed the area for the suspect and when they located him he was not in possession of any CDS but he did have an open arrest warrant through the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

32nd Street and Rainier Avenue: Traffic hazard – 8:05pm. Officers were notified that a sink hole was forming in the intersection. Officers and PW employees closed the intersection. WSSC personnel responded at about 11:15pm to survey the scene and said that they would have a crew out the next morning to repair the roadway. Repairs were completed by Saturday afternoon and the road re-opened.

June 16th:

4000 block of 30th Street: Civil citation – 11:20am. Officers responded for the report of a suspicious person loitering in the area. They located the man described by the complainant and further investigation revealed that he was in possession of less than 10g of marijuana. He was issued a civil citation for the violation and sent on his way.

3800 block of 35th Street: Criminal citation – 12:35pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3400 block of Otis Street: Criminal citation – 3:05pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4700 block of 30th Street: EPS – 4:20pm. Officers responded for the report of a man who had fallen off a bike and possibly unconscious. When the officers found him, he told them that he just finished smoking PCP and could not stay on his bike do to his intoxicated state. He was transported to a local hospital and released to the medical staff for treatment.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue (Lucero Travel): Fraud – 5pm. The victim came into the police station and reported that she purchased airline tickets on March 16th for travel on a future date. When she went to confirm the tickets for the upcoming trip on June 13th she learned that the seats were reserved but never purchased.

June 15th:

Varnum Street and Eastern Avenue: Warrant service – 8:45am. Officers stopped a 2006 Dodge truck for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had an open arrest warrant through Montgomery County for failing to appear in court on traffic charges. He driver was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. 

4300 block of Russell Avenue: Vehicle impound – 10am. Officers impounded a 1999 VW Passat that was illegally parked on a sidewalk.

3500 block of 37th Street: Burglary – 11am. The reporting person told officers that he was contracted by the homeowner to make some repairs. He said he was last at the property on June 10th at about 3pm and the house was secure when he left. When he returned on the 13th at about 10am he discovered that two exterior doors had been forced open and a 3-foot section of copper pipe was missing from a water pump. No evidence as to who may have been responsible for the theft was found.

3200 block of Chillum Road: MIR – 11:55am. Officers spoke with a woman who told them that on several occasions she had problems with people accessing her secure mailbox. The officers examined the mailbox and found that it was not damaged, rather an interior screw was loose allowing gravity to open the box. They were able to secure the screw and make the mailbox function properly.

4100 block of Cedar Lane Alley: Warrant service – 4:10pm. Officers patrolling the area encountered a man known to have an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for theft. The warrant was confirmed and he was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue (Lucero Travel): Fraud – 5pm. The victim came into the police station and reported that she purchased airline tickets on March 29th for travel on a future date. When she went to confirm the tickets for the upcoming trip on July 7th she learned that the seats were reserved but never purchased.

June 14th:

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 2:55am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

4500 block of 30th Street: Vehicle impound – 8:30am. Officers impounded a 2012 Honda displaying tags that expired back in January of this year.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 11:15am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 11:40am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

3800 block of 35th Street: Criminal citation (x2) – 11:50am. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for drinking in public.

31st Street and Bunker Hill Road: CDS possession – 1:40pm. Officers responded for the report of a woman lying in the roadway. They found her and she appeared to be confused and disoriented. Suspecting her to be under the influence of PCP the officers summoned EMS to respond and treat her. Prior to her being transported to Washington Adventist Hospital for treatment officers discovered that she was in possession of a dozen cigarettes that had been dipped in liquid PCP and a vial containing about 3.5 grams of liquid PCP. The drugs were seized and officers have applied for an arrest warrant charging her with possession of a CDS with intent to distribute.

3600 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 8:15pm. Officers stopped a man whom they suspected had been involved in a burglary. Further investigation revealed that he had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County charging him with burglary. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3600 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation (x2) – 8:15pm. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for drinking in public.

2700 block of Webster Street: Felony theft – 10:40pm. The victim told officers that he allowed his brother and his brother’s girlfriend to stay in his apartment during the weekend of June 11th. He was away from the apartment for a good portion of the weekend attending to work obligations. When he returned he found that his brother and the girlfriend were no longer there and he could not contact either of them. Finding this odd, he searched his apartment and discovered that two diamond rings worth over $8,000 were missing. An investigation into possible charges is underway.

June 13th:

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 9:10am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

3200 block of Perry Street: Criminal citation – 9:30am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3800 block of 35th Street: Criminal citation – 9:45am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation (x2) – 10am. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3800 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 10:10am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation (x2) – 4:20pm. Officers issued both a man and a woman criminal citations for urinating in public.

34th Street and Rhode Island Avenue: M/V collision – 4:40pm. While driving north around the traffic circle the driver of a 2016 Chrysler Sebring tried to change lanes and struck a 2001 Honda.  There were no injuries but the Honda was disabled and had to be towed from the scene. The driver of the Chrysler was charged with improperly changing lanes.

June 12th:

4100 block of Rainier Avenue: Traffic – 12:10am. Officers stopped a 1997 Jeep Cherokee for failing to stop at a stop sign. Further investigation revealed that the driver has a suspended license. He was charged accordingly, allowed to park his vehicle in a legal parking space and sent on his way. A short time later officers observed a vehicle traveling with no headlights on and when they stopped the vehicle for the violation they found it to be the same Jeep Cherokee driven by the same suspended driver.  This time the driver was arrested, charged accordingly and delivered to the custody of DOC in Upper Marlboro. The Jeep was impounded for safekeeping.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
