Police Report: June 19-25

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

June 25th:

31st and Upshur Streets: Traffic – 1:55am. Officers stopped a 2003 Mercedes for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the tags affixed to the vehicle belonged to another vehicle and the vehicle itself was unregistered. The driver was issued several traffic citations and the vehicle was impounded.

3100 block of Perry Street: Attempt burglary – 3:15am. Officers responded for the report of a burglary in progress. When they arrived they learned that the homeowner was awakened by the sounds of someone trying to kick in the front door. When the homeowner called police the suspect(s) stopped and fled. One of the residents told the officers that they observed what appeared to be five black males walking down the street towards Eastern Avenue. Officers observed several foot prints on the front door and found the door frame and door damaged. No other evidence was recovered.

June 24th:

3700 block of 34th Street: Stolen vehicle – 7:25am. The owner of a 2000 Ford truck told officers that she parked and secured her vehicle at about 7pm on the 23rd. When she came back to it this morning she discovered it had been stolen. No evidence/witnesses were identified.

3200 block of Otis Street: Criminal citation – 11am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a public place.

3400 block of Otis Street: Vehicle impound – 1:15pm. Officers impounded a 2007 Acura TL after learning that the tags were suspended for a compulsory insurance violation and there was an MSP pickup order for the tags.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 4pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

3500 block of Newton Place: Recovered stolen vehicle – 7:55pm. Officers patrolling with an automated license plate reader received an alert for a stolen auto. Upon further investigation they located an unoccupied 2008 Honda CRV that had been reported stolen to DC police on May 22nd. The vehicle was not damaged and the tags were attached. The vehicle was towed for safe keeping and MPD was notified of the recovery.

June 23rd:

3700 block of Rhode Island Avenue: CDS possession – 2:10am. Officers stopped to check the welfare of a man slumped over next to the bus stop. They found him conscious but incoherent noted a strong odor of CDS about his person. Further investigation revealed that he was in possession of 29.4 grams of marijuana, a digital scale, and a large number of plastic baggies. He was arrested, charged with possession of a CDS with intent to distribute and delivered to the custody of DOC in Upper Marlboro.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: M/V collision – 8am. Officers responded to investigate the report of a single vehicle traffic crash. Once on the scene they discovered that a 2001 Toyota crashed into a tree. The driver appeared under the influence of either CDS or alcohol. He failed standard field sobriety testing and was taken to the Maryland State Police Barrack in College Park for a breathalyzer test. The test was negative for alcohol and no drug recognition expert was available for further drug testing. Officers found burnt marijuana inside the ashtray of the car along with a pipe containing burnt marijuana residue on the driver’s seat. The driver was charged with multiple traffic violations and civilly with possession of less than 10g of marijuana and possession of narcotics paraphernalia. The car was impounded for safekeeping.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 2:35pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

2300 block of Varnum Street: Vehicle impound – 3pm. Officers impounded a 1986 Ford box truck for parking in a posted no parking zone.

4000 block of Cedar Lane Alley: Criminal citation – 3:45pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a public place.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 4pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Attempt stolen auto – 8:15pm. The owner of a 1999 Honda told officers that he parked and secure his car the evening of the 20th. When he returned this evening he discovered the passenger side door lock punched out and damage to the ignition. Officers determined that the ignition damage was consistent with an unsuccessful attempt to steal the vehicle. Nothing of evidentiary value was identified.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 9:35pm. Officers issued a woman a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a public place.

June 22nd:

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 8am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for disorderly conduct.

3800 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 9am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3300 block of Otis Street: Theft from auto – 11:35am. The owner of a 2001 Jeep told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning and discovered that someone had stolen the rear tag of his vehicle.

2700 block of Webster Street: Domestic – 1:50pm. Officers served a temporary protective order. The order was served without incident and a copy of the return of service was faxed to the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office.

June 21st:

3100 block of Chillum Road: Theft from auto – 8am. The owner of a 2016 Honda told officers that he came out to his car this morning and discovered that someone had stolen all four wheels/tires and damaged the driver’s side sometime overnight.

4700 block of 27th Street: Theft from auto – 9:45am. The owner of a 2016 Honda Accord told officers that sometime between 7am and 9am this morning someone stole all four wheels/tires off his car. Officers recovered latent fingerprint evidence from the vehicle and forwarded the prints to RAFIS for identification.

4500 block of 29th Street: Attempt stolen auto – 5:50pm. The owner of a 2001 Honda Civic got a call from his wife telling him that someone had broken into his car. His wife covered the window with plastic to secure the interior from the weather. When he returned home he discovered that the car’s passenger window had been smashed out and the ignition was broken.

3400 block of Newton Street: Recovered stolen vehicle – 11:50am. Officers patrolling the area stopped to investigate an unoccupied 2007 Dodge Caliber. They noticed that the interior had smoke and fire damage and the ignition was missing. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen to MRPD on June 11th from an address in the 2900 block of Queens Chapel Road. Prince George’s County Fire Investigators were notified and responded to the scene for a follow-up investigation. The vehicle was later impounded and the owner notified of the recovery.

3300 block of Chillum Road: Warrant service – 7:45pm. Officers investigating an illegally parked vehicle contacted its owner. While speaking with the owner the officers learned that he had a suspended driver’s license and an open warrant out of Harford County for failure to appear in court for child support. The officers arrested the man on the warrant and transported him to the Maryland State Police Barracks in Waterloo where he was transferred to the custody of Harford County Sheriff’s Deputies.

3700 block of 34th Street: Burglary – 7:50pm. Officers responded to the Greater Antioch Missionary Baptist Church for the report of a burglary that occurred earlier. The investigation revealed that the suspect(s) made entry into the church through the pastor’s office window, preceded to the trustee’s office, stole about $25 from a glass jar on a table and fled. The pastor advised that he simply forgot to set the alarm after Sunday service. The window to the pastor’s office was broken prior to the burglary.

June 20th:

3000 block of Arundel Road: Vehicle impound – 11:40am. Officers impounded a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix for displaying a temporary registration plate that expired back in April of this year.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 12:55pm. Officers stopped to check the welfare of a visibly intoxicated man at the bus stop. Further investigation revealed that he had two open arrest warrants through Prince George’s County for failing to appear in court on a trespassing charge and failing to appear in court on a charge of disturbing the peace. He was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

June 19th:

2500 block of Allison Street: EPS – 11:20am. Officers responded for the report of a domestic dispute between mother and her adult daughter. When the officers arrived they observed a loud verbal argument between the two women. The daughter was crying and screaming that she wanted to kill herself. Officers took her into custody, and transported her to Washington Adventist Hospital and released her to the medical staff for an emergency psychiatric evaluation.

4300 block of 28th Place: Citizen robbery – 2:40pm. The victim told officers that he was walking from the parking lot when he was approached by two black male suspects. One of the suspects struck the victim in the head with a handgun while the second suspect stole his cell phone, cash and keys. The victim said he last saw both suspects fleeing on foot towards Russell Avenue. The victim could not provide any further description of the suspects.  EMS responded to evaluate the victim and he refused treatment.

A canvas of area by additional units provided negative results. PGPD robbery detectives responded to the scene to interview the victim and begin a follow-up investigation. On June 20th PGPD patrol officers conducted a traffic stop at 16th Avenue and Chillum Road. During the course of the stop, the two individuals in the car (one adult male and one juvenile male) were developed as suspects in a recent robbery string in the Chillum area which included the robbery in the 4300 block of 28th Place. Both suspects were transported to the District I station to be interviewed by robbery detectives. During the interviews both suspects waived their Miranda rights and provided verbal confessions to the 28th Place robbery. Detectives obtained a search warrant for the vehicle and recovered multiple items of evidentiary value. The adult suspect was charged with robbery and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. The juvenile was similarly charged and delivered to the custody of the Cheltenham Youth Facility for detention.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
