Police Report: February 25

February 25th:

3500 block of 37th Street: At about 8:30 am officers took a report of a commercial burglary. A representative of the business told the officers that someone forced entry into the business through a roof door. Once inside the thieves stole a quantity of US currency and several electronics items. The officers processed the scene for evidence with negative results. They also learned that the business has working surveillance cameras; however the person who operates the system was not available. The representative will attempt to provide a copy of the surveillance. The case is open pending follow up.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: At about 10:30 am the fire department responded to a working apartment fire. The majority of the fire was confined to two apartments and is believed to have started in the floor/ceiling space between the two. All other apartments in the building sustained some damage either as a direct result of fire or because of smoke or firefighting efforts. Utility companies responded and shut off gas and electric service to the building and it is expected that the building will not be habitable for some time. One male resident who is in the final stages of hospice was taken to PGH as a precaution. No other injuries were reported. The fire department had OEM and Red Cross representatives on the scene to assist in relocating displaced residents.

4000 block of 30th Street: At about 7:45 pm officers responded to investigate a suspicious vehicle. Their investigation revealed that the driver of the vehicle was under the influence of either alcohol or drugs. She was arrested, charged with DUI/DWI and released after refusing to submit to blood alcohol testing. Her vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.

3200 block of Varnum Street: At about 9:10 pm officers received a call from PGPD robbery detectives requesting assistance in locating a vehicle that was taken in an armed carjacking earlier in the day in Suitland. During the carjacking the victim was shot in the neck. MRPD officers began a systematic search of the City for the carjacked vehicle. At about 11:50 pm the officers found the vehicle, a 1993 Lincoln Mark III, parked and unoccupied in the driveway of an abandoned house in the 3200 block of Varnum Street. The vehicle was impounded and towed to PGPD’s evidence unit.

Crime Prevention Tip: Car Alarms

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage. So, the next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed when you retire for the night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone tries to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, within a few se...
