Police Report: July 20-21

July 20th:

4100 block of Russell Avenue: At about 7:10 pm officers took a report of a residential burglary. The victim told the officers that he left home this morning at about 7:00 am and returned about 7 pm to find his front door slightly ajar. When he checked his apartment he discovered his laptop was missing. There were no signs of forced entry to the apartment. The victim told the officers that he believes that an ex may have taken the computer.

2700 block of Allison Street: At about 11:30 pm officers took a report of a residential burglary. The victim told the officers that he left his apartment at about 1:20 pm and when he returned at 11:20 pm he discovered that the front door had been forced open. The victim further found that the apartment had been ransacked and several televisions, jewelry and other electronics had been stolen. No evidence was recovered and not surprisingly, no witnesses were identified.

July 21st (early morning):

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: At about 1:15 am officers conducting a surveillance of the Thrifty Car Rental parking lot observed a black male described as about 50 years old wearing a red plaid shirt and blue pants walking on the lot carrying a large wheeled trash can. The officers tried to stop the man to investigate but he fled the area leaving the trash can behind. While conducting a follow-up investigation the officers discovered two gasoline containers inside the trash can and a passenger car that had gasoline stolen from it. The officers also received information from an anonymous witness about the individual’s first name, street name, and a possible work location. It is believed that the individual is responsible for at least three previous thefts of gasoline from vehicles at Thrifty. The investigation is continuing.

Crime Prevention Tip: Car Alarms

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage. So, the next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed when you retire for the night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone tries to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, within a few se...
