Police Report: December 10-12

December 10th:

4000 block of 34th Street: At about 9 am officers took a vandalism report. The reporting person, a contractor working on the vacant property, told the officers that he left the property secured and locked on December 9th. When he returned this morning he discovered that someone had damaged the front door lock possibly trying to enter the property. No entry was made because the top dead bolt lock remained secured. A check of the residence revealed no further damage and nothing missing from inside. No additional evidence/witnesses could be located.

4700 block of 31st Place: At about 2:40 pm officers took a hit and run motor vehicle collision report. The victim’s vehicle was legally parked and unoccupied when it was struck by an unidentified vehicle which failed to remain at the scene. The victim’s vehicle sustained damage to the driver’s side front and rear door areas. No additional evidence/witnesses could be located.

3200 block of Taylor Street: At about 2:50 pm officers took a report of a theft. The victim told the officers that she had ordered several items online that were scheduled to be delivered on different dates via FedEx and UPS. On December 9th she came home to find a FedEx notice posted on her door stating that the items had been delivered but observed no package on her porch. FedEx confirmed that the package was left on her front porch by the delivery man. She filed a theft report with Fed Ex. She then contacted UPS regarding the separate delivery and they confirmed that the package was delivered to her front porch on December 6th. She filed a theft report with UPS for this package as well. She is now in the process of reporting the thefts to the companies from which she ordered the items.

December 11th:

3300 block of Rhode Island Avenue: At about 2:45 am officers stopped a vehicle that was driving with a flat front tire. Further investigation revealed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested, charged with DUI/DWI and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. His vehicle was impounded.

December 12th:

4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station): At about 8 am officers responded to investigate a bomb threat. When the officers arrived they questioned a man who told them that he believed he had broken the Egyptian & Israeli Government code and felt that he was targeted to be killed. He also said that he believed that a bomb had been placed in his vehicle. The officers located the man’s vehicle which he had abandoned in the gravel parking lot in the 2200 block of Varnum Street. The vehicle was checked for explosive devices with negative results. FBI Agents from the Baltimore task force were contacted and will follow up.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: At about 12:30 pm officers took a report of a vandalism to auto. The victim/owner showed the officers where someone had broken out the passenger side window of his 1994 Mustang. No evidence as to those responsible for the damage could be located. Nothing of value was taken from the vehicle.

4300 block of Kaywood Drive: At about 8:30 pm officers responded for the report of a domestic assault. When the officers arrived they observed a female subject yelling and screaming and throwing items belonging to her husband out into the hallway. Further investigation revealed that the woman had physically assaulted her husband prior to the officers’ arrival. After a brief struggle she was arrested, charged with 2nd degree domestic assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

Community Shredding Day

Please mark you calendars for Saturday July 18th, 2009 for community shredding day. Priority One Shredding of Bowie, Maryland will provide free personal shredding services and secure document destruction from 8 am until 11am at the Bunker Hill Fire Station. Priority One Shredding is a leading provider of personal and business secure document destruction. Residents are welcome to watch their documents being destroyed, and once the shredding process is completed, the remains are locked in the mobile destruction unit until the paper is recycled. Priority One will also provide residents with a variety of identity theft prevention information free of charge. If you miss the community shredding day on July 18th, be sure to bring your bulk documents to National Night Out. Priority One will be onsite from 6-9 pm providing shredding services to residents again, free of charge .

Parking Citation Collection Notices

As you read this entry, many of our residents may have received a collection notice regarding one or more unpaid parking citations. We have received at least a hundred telephone calls, and our Records staff is quite taxed sorting out those notices that were received in error, and those that are legitimate. Just a few notes of caution that I’d like to pass along to help make things easier for all concerned. First, no member of the police department staff will void, cancel or otherwise dispose of a valid collection notice. We are also not authorized to make any payment arrangements or reduce the amount owed to the City. The staff at City Hall is under the same constraints. Persons who receive a collection notice and have concerns that it was issued in error should call the police department during regular business hours and our staff will research the citation.
