Police Report: August 28 - September 3

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

September 3rd:

4000 block of 34th Street (Glut): Theft – 10:55am. Two suspects came into the store, placed several items in cardboard boxes and fled to a waiting green Mercury Villager van with DC tags DM8559. Officers located and tried to stop the van but it fled into DC and was lost.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 5pm. Officers issuing a man a criminal citation for drinking in public learned that he had two open warrants though Prince George’s County, one for trespassing and the other for disorderly conduct. He was arrested on the warrants and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4000 block of 34th Street: Warrant service – 9:50pm. Officers patrolling with an automated license plate reader were alerted to a vehicle with a suspended registration and a pick-up order for the tags. When they stopped the vehicle they discovered that the driver did not have a driver’s license. The vehicle was impounded and the driver charged accordingly. During the course of the investigation officers learned that a passenger in the vehicle had an open warrant through Prince George’s County for FTA driving without insurance. She was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

September 2nd:

4100 block of 28th Street: Stolen vehicle – 5:25am. The owner of a 1997 Honda reported that he came out for his vehicle this morning and discovered that it had been stolen.

4100 block of 28th Street: Stolen vehicle (recovered) - 12pm. Officers were notified by PGPD that the 1997 Honda stolen from the 4100 block of 28th Street early this morning was recovered on the 1500 block of Merrimac Drive in Hyattsville. No arrests were made.

3400 block of Newton Street: Recovered stolen auto – 5:30pm. Officers investigating the report of a ransacked 2005 Ford E250 van discovered that the vehicle had been previously reported stolen from an address in Hyattsville. The owner was contacted and responded to the scene and took possession of the vehicle.

September 1st:

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 7am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

2500 block of Queens Chapel Road: Stolen vehicle – 8am. The owner of a 2016 Honda reported that he came out to his vehicle this morning and discovered it had been stolen. Officers contacted a witness nearby who told them that they just saw a vehicle matching this description in DC on their way to work. Officers transported the victim to the location of the vehicle described by the witness and positively identified it as his. The vehicle was missing its wheels and tires and the driver’s window was shattered.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 2:05pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3200 block of Buchanan Street: Attempt burglary – 3pm. The resident reported that she heard a sound as if someone was trying to open her apartment door. When she went to investigate she saw a black male in his twenties fleeing from her door down the steps and out of the building. The suspect left behind a card he used to manipulate the door lock to gain entry.

3100 block of Chillum Road: Vehicle impound – 4:10pm. Officers impounded a 2008 Toyota after an investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license and was in possession of less than ten grams of marijuana. The driver was issued several State citations and a civil citation got the CDS violation.

3700 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 6:40pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4300 block of 34th Street: Domestic – 9pm. The reporting person told officers that she and her husband got into a verbal argument. Her husband became angry during the argument and kicked in the front door breaking the security chain. Officers completed a lethality assessment and advised the woman to contact a District Court Commissioner to possibly obtain a protective order.

August 31st:

4500 block of 30th Street: Theft from auto – 7am. The owner of a 2015 Hyundai reported that someone broke into her vehicle by smashing out a back passenger side window. One inside those responsible stole a laptop and an iPod.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 8:50am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 9:05am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Vehicle impound – 9:35am. Officers impounded a 1990 International truck that was displaying tags that expired in August of 2015.

August 30th:

4400 block of 30th Street: Theft from Auto (Supplement) - 5:40am. Officers were notified my Montgomery County Police that tags reported stolen off a 2010 Subaru were recovered at the intersection of East Avenue and Stratford Street in Chevy Chase. At the time of recovery the tags were affixed to a car that had been reported stolen from an address in DC.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue (Thrifty): Theft from auto – 8:30am. Employees reported that sometime overnight someone stole the batteries out of three rental trucks.

2800 block of Upshur Street: Civil citation – 1:05pm. Officers issued a man a civil citation for possession of less than 10g of marijuana.

4200 block of Kaywood Drive: Attempt robbery – 5:30pm. The victim told officers that he was walking to his apartment building when two black males approached him, produced a handgun and demanded his property. The victim got into a physical altercation with the armed suspect and was able to get the gun from him. The victim fired two rounds into the air to try and scare the suspects off and fled the area on foot towards Eastern Avenue to try and get away. The suspects chased the victim demanding their gun back. The victim, fearing that the suspects were going to continue after him removed the magazine from the gun, fired the remaining round in the chamber into the ground and gave the gun back. The suspects then fled and the victim went back to his apartment. Officers later learned that the same suspects committed several robberies in 4D right before and after this incident. MPDC chased a vehicle occupied by the suspects a short time later and after the vehicle struck a pedestrian and crashed they were able to apprehend one of the suspects. He was found in possession of a matching firearm without the magazine. PGPD is coordinating with DC on the case.

Chillum Road and Buchanan Street: Vehicle impound – 9:40pm. Officers impounded a 1997 Acura that was unregistered and displaying tags issued to another vehicle.

August 29th:

3200 block of Arundel Road: Theft from auto – 9am. The owner of a 2005 Chevy reported that he came out to his vehicle this morning and discovered it had been ransacked and $50 had been stolen from inside.

August 28th:

2700 block of Upshur Street: Vandalism to auto – 6:55pm. The owner of a 2003 BMW told officers that sometime after 3pm and the time he called police someone cut the front right passenger side tire and damaged the windshield.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
