Police Report: August 7-13

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

 

August 13th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Theft – 11:30pm. A woman’s purse was stolen from a bus stop bench.

August 12th:

3700 block of 34th Street: Violation of a protective order – 1:30am. Officers arrested a man for violating a final protective order.

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Recovered stolen auto – 1:10am. Officers were notified by DC police that a 2012 Audi stolen from Chauncey Place was recovered in the 1300 block of Longfellow Street NW. The owner was notified by telephone.

3300 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 7am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

August 11th:

2900 block of Bunker Hill Road: Theft from auto – 7:50am. The owner of a 2013 Kia reported that someone broke into his car through the read driver’s side window and stole a wallet.

4100 block of Russell Avenue: Residential burglary – 8am. Officers identified a former maintenance employee who illegally entered a resident’s apartment with a passkey. A warrant was obtained for the man’s arrest.

August 10th:

4600 block of 25th Street: Vehicle impound – 2:30am. Officers impounded a 2013 Toyota for blocking a private driveway and that had numerous registration violations.

3100 block of Varnum Street: Vehicle impound – 8:15am. Officers impounded a 2012 Nissan for displaying tags issued to another vehicle that were also expired.

3100 block of Varnum Street: Vehicle impound – 8:15am. Officers impounded a 1995 Geo Prism for displaying improper tags.

August 9th:

3100 block of Windham Road: Vehicle impound – 10:40am. Officers impounded a 2003 Toyota that had been previously damaged by a fire.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Assault – 12:30pm. Officers investigating a strong arm robbery from August 8th stopped to interview a possible suspect. During questioning the man became belligerent and shoved an officer while trying to leave the scene. He was arrested and charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer.

3100 block of Varnum Street: Emergency petition – 2:25pm. Officers assisted DC behavioral health officers with taking a man into custody who was acting erratically and making death threats. The man was taken to Providence Hospital for an emergency evaluation.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road (Beauty Depot): Theft – 4:50pm. The store manager told officers that three women came into the store and stole two wigs.

August 8th:

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Lost property – 12pm. A man reported losing his DC taxicab permit.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Theft – 12:45pm. A man reported that while inside the library he left his phone unattended. When he went back for the phone he discovered it had been stolen.

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Theft from auto – 1pm. The owner of a 1997 Honda reported that someone stole the right side rearview mirror glass from her vehicle.

3309 Bunker Hill Road: Criminal citation – 1:45pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for trespassing.

3800 block of 34th Street: EPS – 7:20pm. Officers transported an injured man suspected of being under the influence of narcotics to Prince George’s Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

3100 block of Chillum Road (7-11): Disorderly – 8:20pm. Officers arrested a juvenile male for disorderly conduct.

3700 block of 37th Street: Theft – 8:15pm. A man selling his house discovered his wallet missing after showing the property to a prospective buyer.

August 7th:

3500 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 1:15am. Officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation and learned that the driver had an open warrant for assault out of the District of Columbia. He was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3800 block of 33rd Street: Vehicle impound – 12:10pm. Officers impounded a 2004 VW that had been previously marked for 48-hour towing.

34th and Perry Streets: Hit and run collision – 9am. The owners of two vehicles reported that an unknown vehicle struck their parked vehicles and left the scene without providing identification.

3800 block of 34th Street: Stolen vehicle – 3:30pm. The owner of a 2009 Chevy Traverse told officers that her vehicle was stolen sometime during the week she was out of town on vacation.

3800 block of 37th Street: Property damage – 3pm. The homeowner told officers that she was having an ongoing dispute with a tenant and said that the tenant damaged an electrical box.

3200 block of Chillum Road: Property damage – 8:30pm. The owner of a 2008 Chevy told officers that she discovered scratched on the rear bumper of the vehicle.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
