Crime Update

I reported the following information to the Mayor & Council at their regular business meeting on September 2nd. At the suggestion of Councilmember Tarlau, I am posting it here on my Blog in order to keep readers apprised of our efforts to solve the recent rash of burglaries.

During the months of July and August we have seen a significant increase in the number of residential burglaries in our single family neighborhoods; and the number of vehicle thefts has also risen above those reported during the same period in 2007. Beginning on Monday August 25th the department implemented an “all hands on deck” operation in response to this recent rash of burglaries. Our officers have been working with officers from the Hyattsville Police Department, Takoma Park Police Department and detectives from PGPD to identify and arrest the persons responsible for these crimes.

I am pleased to report that our efforts have resulted in the identification and arrest of two individuals who have been positively identified in several burglaries across Mount Rainier, Brentwood and Hyattsville. We also believe that these individuals may be responsible for as many as thirty or more burglaries in the District I area over the past few months. We have also identified a third suspect who is believed to have worked with the other two to fence, pawn or otherwise dispose of items stolen in the various burglaries. A fourth individual has been arrested and charged with the theft of a motor vehicle from Takoma Park that was used in at least one burglary in Mount Rainier and two home invasion robberies in Hyattsville.”

At my request, State’s Attorney Glenn Ivey has assigned a special prosecutor to coordinate the prosecution of these individuals.

Crime Prevention Tip: Car Alarms

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage. So, the next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed when you retire for the night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone tries to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, within a few se...
