Police Report: July 30

One Municipal Place: At about 7:50 am officers patrolling the plaza in front of City Hall observed an individual drinking an alcoholic beverage. He was issued a criminal citation for the violation and sent on his way.

2400 block of Chillum Road: At about 2:30 pm officers were conducting a laser speed enforcement detail and stopped a silver Chrysler Pacifica that they recorded as traveling 50 MPH in the 35 MPH speed zone. The vehicle did not immediately stop and continued to travel at a high rate on Chillum Road, finally pulling into the Shopper’s Food parking lot where it stopped. As the officers approached the vehicle the front seat passenger got out of the car and fled the area on foot. He driver also got out and the officers were able to detain him before he could get away. The officers detected an odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and also noticed that the driver was very nervous. The officers asked the driver for his consent to search inside the vehicle which he granted. The officers’ subsequent search uncovered a plastic bag containing approximately 420 grams of a green leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana. It is estimated that the street value of the seized marijuana is about $8,000. They also discovered and seized approximately $4,000.00 in US currency. The driver was arrested and charged with CDS possession and distribution along with several traffic violations. The Chrysler Pacifica was seized and we have instituted forfeiture proceedings against it and the $4,000 cash seized from the defendant. The defendant was remanded to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville on $150,000 bond. An investigation is continuing to identify and charge the passenger.

3100 block of Buchanan Street: At about 9:45 pm officers investigated a vehicle and its driver that were stopped in the middle of the roadway. They found that the driver had fallen asleep and that his driver’s license was suspended. He was issued several state citations and his vehicle was impounded.

Crime Prevention Tip: Car Alarms

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage. So, the next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed when you retire for the night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone tries to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, within a few se...
