Police Report: April 12-18

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

 

April 18th:

 

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Vandalism to auto – 3:10pm. The owner of a 2006 Chevy van told officers that he discovered two of the door locks had been tampered with. The locks were damaged but no entry was made and nothing was stolen.

 

3800 block of Buchanan Street: 2nd degree assault - 8:50pm. Two men told officers that they were playing soccer when they were approached by two other men who struck both victims in the face before fleeing the area.

 

4600 block of 29th Street: Disorderly – 10:15pm. Officers arrested a man and charged him with disorderly conduct.

 

April 17th:

 

3100 block of Chillum Road: Theft from auto – 5:50am. The owner of a 2013 Ford Explorer told officers that someone broke into his vehicle through the front passenger window and stole the vehicle’s radio.

 

3200 block of Arundel Road: Vandalism to auto – 7:10am. The owner of a 1992 Lexus reported that someone smashed out the driver’s window and placed it on top of the vehicle. Nothing was reported stolen.

 

4000 block of 29th Street: Theft from auto – 8:20am. The owner of a 2008 Mercury reported that someone smashed out the rear passenger window and ransacked the vehicle. The victim stated that the only thing taken was a pair of leather gloves.

 

3100 block of Chillum Road: Theft from auto – 10:35am. The owner of a 2013 Honda Accord told officers that he discovered that someone had stolen all four wheels and tires off the vehicle and left it sitting on blocks.

 

3200 block of Otis Street: Lost documents – 2:10pm. A woman came to the police station to report that she had lost her passport and refugee papers.

 

4100 block of 30th Street: Theft from auto – 4:30pm. The owner of a 2009 Subaru told officers that someone broke into his vehicle through the rear passenger window and stole about $5 in change from inside.

 

3800 block of 37th Street: Identity theft – 8:20pm. The victim reported that she contacted the Maryland Comptroller’s office and learned that someone had filled a tax return in her name.

 

April 16th:

 

3000 block of Arundel Road: Burglary – 4:10pm. The two residents told officers that they came home to discover that someone had broken into their apartment and stole each of their laptop computers. Point of entry appeared to be through a bedroom window.

 

4400 block of 29th Street: Death report – 3:35am. An elderly woman under the care of Community Hospice was found deceased. The woman’s remains were removed by Gash’s Funeral Home at the request of her family.

 

April 15th:

 

4000 block of 35th Street: Tampering – 7:10am. The owner of a 2007 VW Jetta told officers that she came out to her vehicle this morning to discover that sometime overnight someone ransacked the vehicle’s interior. Nothing was stolen or damaged.

 

2300 block of Varnum Street: Criminal citation – 11:15pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

 

April 14th:

 

3100 block of Shepherd Street: Theft from auto – 10:35am. The owner of a 2000 Buick Century told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning to discover that someone had stolen the front grill off of the vehicle.

 

2300 block of Varnum Street: Theft – 10:40pm. The store clerk told officers that he rang up and bagged several items for a customer. The customer took the bag and left the store without paying for the items.

The suspect was described as a black male; 23-25 years of age; 5’6” tall; 160 lbs; wearing black pants and a black shirt.

 

April 13th:

 

4200 block of Eastern Avenue: Stolen/recovered vehicle – 4am. Hyattsville City police investigating a vehicle fire discovered that the vehicle was registered to a Mount Rainier resident. Officers contacted the resident who confirmed that the vehicle had been stole from his residence sometime between 4pm on the 16th and the time he was notified by police.

 

April 12th:

 

Cedar lane alley to the rear of the 4100 block of 34th Street: Citizen robbery – 1:45am. The victim, a taxi operator, picked up two Latino males at an address on Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring. He drove them to the area of the Cedar Lane alley where one of the men accosted him with a knife and ordered him out of the taxi. Both men assaulted the victim before stealing several items of his personal property. Both suspects then fled the area towards 34th Street. A Hyattsville City K-9 team responded and attempted to track the suspects but were unable to do so. PGPD robbery detectives responded to the scene to interview the victim and assume a follow-up investigation. The victim was only able to describe his assailants as Latino males 20-23 years of age.

Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). Police Report: June 9-10

June 9th : 2500 block of Allison Street : At about 1 pm officers took a report of a citizen robbery . The victim told the officers and PGPD robbery detectives that she arrived to meet a client when she was approached by two black males. One of the men approached her from the front; the second came up behind her and placed her in a head lock. The second man demanded the keys to her gold 2005 Honda Accord (MD tags 9FA Y36). The victim complied and the two got into her car and fled the scene. The victim described her assailants as black males about 19-20 years of age. The first man was about 5’8” tall with shoulder length dreadlocks and was wearing a white t-shirt, long jean shorts, white socks and tennis shoes. The second man was about 5’10” tall, also had shoulder length dreadlocks and was wearing a white navy hat. The officers also discovered a white 2004 Chevrolet Express van that is believed to have been driven to the scene by the two suspects. A check of the vehicle’s registration

Boston Marathon/West, Texas Spam Campaigns

There is a new spam campaign in circulation using the Boston Marathon bombings that occurred on April 15, 2013 as a lure. Users are sent an e-mail encouraging them to a watch a video of the explosion. When the user clicks on the enclosed link to watch the video malware is installed on the user’s computer.   The following URL patterns have been found in these e-mails: http://[IP-address]/boston.html   http://[IP-address]/news.html   When the user clicks on one of the links the Kehlios worm is installed on the user’s system which has the capacity to send spam; carry out Distributed Denial of Service Attacks; and steal online currency such as bitcoins. Most major anti-virus vendors have signatures for detecting this malware so users should keep their antivirus programs up-to-date.   In addition to the Boston Marathon spam campaign, a West, Texas plant explosion spam campaign has also sprung up.
