Police report: April 5-11

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

April 11th:

3400 block of Rhode island Avenue: Theft – 8pm. An employee of the Balbuena Travel Agency reported that a man came into the store with two children. While the employee was distracted the man stole her cell phone and escaped on a metro bus.

April 10th:

Nothing significant to report.

April 9th:

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Lost property 5:45pm. A man came into the police station and reported that he lost his wallet while riding the metro.

34th and Webster Streets: Hit and run collision 7pm. The driver of a 2001 Toyota reported that while stopped at the stop sign a 2004 Crown Victoria rear ended her and fled the scene. A short time later officers were able to locate the vehicle and arrest the driver.

April 8th:

3800 block of 34th Street: MIR9:40am. A man contacted officers and reported that the Alife Market was selling single cigarettes. Officers investigated the allegation and found no evidence of the violation.

4400 block of 28th Street: Vehicle impound – 11:10am. Officers impounded a 1998 Lincoln Navigator for having a registration that expired in October of 2014. It had been previously marked for 48-hour towing.

4400 block of 28th Street: Vehicle impound – 11:10am. Officers impounded a 1992 Buick for having a registration that expired in January of 2015. It had been previously marked for 48-hour towing.

28th Place and Webster Street: Hit and run collision – 11:25am. The owner of a 2005 Honda Accord reported that he came out and discovered damage to the front bumper and driver’s side of his vehicle that was consistent with being struck by another vehicle.

4100 block of 32nd Street: 2nd degree assault – 7:45pm. Officers arrested a man after witnessing him physically assault his brother.

April 7th:

4300 block of 28th Place: Domestic5:40am. The victim told officers that she and her boyfriend were involved in a heated argument and the boyfriend broke her bedroom window before fleeing the scene. A lethality assessment screen was completed and a protection order advised.  

4000 block of 31st Street: Fraud – 3:20pm. The victim told officers she received notification from her bank about several purchases were made in DC using her bank card. None of the purchases were made or authorized by the victim.

April 6th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 10:15am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for an alcohol violation.

31st and Perry Streets: Motor vehicle collision – 11:15am. Officers took a report of a collision between a fire/rescue vehicle and the bollards on Perry Street. Two bollards were destroyed.

April 5th:

3800 block of 34th Street: Destruction of property – 12:45pm. Officers detained an intoxicated man outside the Alife market who entered the store and knocked several items off of the shelves rendering them unable to be sold. The on duty manger did not wish to pursue charges.

3200 block of Queenstown Drive: Brush fire – 3:10pm. Officers were flagged down by a citizen who reported a fire near Queenstown Park. Fire/rescue personnel responded and extinguished the fire.

2300 block of Arundel Road: Theft – 3:55pm. An intoxicated man told officers that while he was waiting for a food order from the Grand China restaurant a Hispanic male walked up to him, reached in his pocket and stole his wallet.

Citizens are reminded to PLEASE call and report suspicious activity. Even if you choose not to provide your name or other personal information, we still need your help as extra eyes and ears in the community.

Crime Prevention Tip: Car Alarms

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage. So, the next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed when you retire for the night.
