Police Report: March 29 - April 4

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

April 4th:

Nothing significant to report.

April 3rd:

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Theft from auto – 5:20pm. The owner of a 1995 Nissan maxima reported that someone stole the rear tag off his vehicle.

4200 block of Russell Avenue: Domestic assault – 7:10pm. Officers learned that a couple got into an argument over the TV volume. The man assaulted the female during the argument. He was arrested and charged with 2nd degree domestic assault.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation (x2) – 10:20pm. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for drinking in public.

April 2nd:

4100 block of 28th Street: Vehicle impound – 2:50am. Officers impounded a 2011 Nissan Rogue for a compulsory insurance violation.

3300 block of Chillum Road: Warrant service – 8:15pm. Officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation and learned that the driver had an open arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on a charge of driving without a license. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3600 block of Oak lane: Theft from auto – 9:15am. The owner of a 2005 Suzuki Rodeo told officers that he came out to his vehicle and saw the passenger door open and item missing from the back seat. He located a paper trail leading to the 3800 block of Otis Street where he recovered all his property.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 12:20pm. Officers responded for the report of a woman walking around in just her underwear. She was located and the officers discovered she had an open arrest warrant through DC for 2nd degree assault. She was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4500 block of 30th Street: Burglary – 1pm. Officers took a report of a burglary that occurred earlier. The resident told the officers that she didn’t initially discover anything missing but later identified several items of her personal property that had been taken.

3700 block of 37th Street: Citizen robbery – 6:15pm. The victim told officers that she was approached by a black male who pointed a small black handgun at her neck. Upon demand, she turned over her cell phone and wallet to the suspect who fled down 37th Street towards Otis. Additional police units from Cottage City, Bladensburg, and Maryland Park assisted in the canvass and perimeter. Greenbelt PD assisted with a K-9. A track was made into DC with negative results. Some of the victim’s wallet contents were later located in the 3500 block of 37th Street. PGPD detectives responded to take over the investigation.

3500 block of Otis Street: Attempt citizen robbery – 6:25pm. The victim told officers that she was doing when she was approached by a black male who displayed a black handgun and demanded money. The victim said she did not have any money and the suspect checked her person for property. The suspect fled without taking any property on Newton Place toward 37th Street. Officers and detectives believe that the suspect in this incident is the same man who robbed the woman in the 3700 block of 37th Street a few minutes earlier.

April 1st:

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: MIR – 12pm. A man came into the police station and turned in a Maryland license plate he found in the area of New York and Michigan Avenues in NE DC. Further investigation revealed that the plate was reported stolen as of March 30th through the Prince George’s County Police Department.

3500 block of Newton Place: Recovered stolen auto – 11:30pm. Officers recovered a 2004 Acura TSX that had been reported stolen from an address in Montgomery County on March 20th.

March 31st:

3300 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 2:15am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

March 30th:

4300 block of 28th Place: Vehicle impound – 12:30am. Officers impounded a 2007 Chevy Tahoe for unauthorized parking in a handicapped space.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Recovered stolen vehicle – 9:30pm. Officers were notified by DC police that they recovered a 2001 Chrysler van stolen from the 3600 block of Buchanan Street on March 22nd. There were no arrests made and the owner was notified.

4200 block of Kaywood Drive: Hit and run collision – 8:30am. The owner of a 2013 Honda Insight reported that she came out to her vehicle this morning and discovered that someone had struck the side of it.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Warrant service – 11:20pm. Officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation and learned that the driver had an open arrest warrant through Montgomery County for failing to appear in court. He was arrested on the warrant and turned over to Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies at the County line.

March 29th:

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Vehicle impound – 3:45am. Officers working with an ALPR located a 2010 Chevy HHR with a suspended registration. The vehicle was impounded and the driver was charged with driving on a suspended license.

2200 block of Varnum Street: Theft from auto – 1:50pm. The owner of a 2011 Nissan Altima told officers that she left church and walked across the street to her vehicle where she set her purse on the back street. She then walked down to the Family Dollar to do some shopping. According to witnesses minutes later a black Dodge Challenger pulled up near the victim’s car and a male exited. The male broke the rear window with an unknown object and grabbed the victim’s purse and the Challenger fled the area towards Eastern Avenue. The same suspect vehicle had been involved in several thefts from autos all around the area and has been seen displaying paper temporary tags.

4100 block of 34th Street: DUI – 11:25pm. Officers stopped a 2008 Dodge Caravan for driving without headlights illuminated. Further investigation revealed that the driver was driving without a license and was under the influence of alcohol. The driver failed the standardized field sobriety test and was arrested. She was transported to the University of Maryland PD where she submitted to a breathalyzer test. The test revealed that her blood alcohol content was 0.24, three times the legal limit. She was issued several citations and released into custody of mother at home. The vehicle was impounded.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
