Police Report: October 20

3249 Rhode Island Avenue (MRPD): At about 7:15 am officers met with an individual who came in to the police station to surrender to an open warrant. He told officers that he received a letter in the mail notifying him that he had an open warrant through Prince George’s County for failure to appear in court. The officers confirmed the existence of the warrant and took the man into custody. He was delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville without incident.

4200 block of 31st Street: At about 11:55 am officers responded for the report of an activated residential burglar alarm. When the officers arrived they discovered an open back door. A police K-9 unit responded to search the residence but found no one inside. The owner of the residence along with MRPD officers did a walk through inspection of the house. After the inspection the owner told the officers that she could not find anything missing. Officers attempted to lift latent fingerprint evidence from the back door with negative results. The owner was advised to call police if she found anything missing at a later time.

4800 block of Frolick Street, Hyattsville: At about 3 pm MRPD was notified by Hyattsville police that they recovered a red 1997 Chevy truck with Maryland tags 12S339 that was reported stolen from the 4300 block of Kaywood Drive in Mount Rainier on October 17th. The registration plates were not recovered with the truck. The vehicle was impounded for safekeeping and the owner was notified of the recovery.

Parking Citation Collection Notices

As you read this entry, many of our residents may have received a collection notice regarding one or more unpaid parking citations. We have received at least a hundred telephone calls, and our Records staff is quite taxed sorting out those notices that were received in error, and those that are legitimate. Just a few notes of caution that I’d like to pass along to help make things easier for all concerned. First, no member of the police department staff will void, cancel or otherwise dispose of a valid collection notice. We are also not authorized to make any payment arrangements or reduce the amount owed to the City. The staff at City Hall is under the same constraints. Persons who receive a collection notice and have concerns that it was issued in error should call the police department during regular business hours and our staff will research the citation. All payments are to be made either to the collection agency directly or at City Hall. The police department does not acce...
