Police Report: July 31 - August 2

Friday July 31st:

Otis Street and Wells Avenue (Mount Rainier South Skate Park) : At about 11 am officers on patrol observed an individual consuming an alcoholic beverage in public. He was issued a criminal citation for the violation and sent on his way.

Saturday August 1st:

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: At about 4:10 am officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. When they approached the driver they observed that he had a strong odor of alcohol about him and was unable to follow the officers’ simple commands. He was arrested and transported to the University of Maryland Police Department for a breath test. Once at the U of MD PD he refused to submit to the blood alcohol test. He was then taken to DOC in Hyattsville where he was charged with DUI/DWI.

4200 block of 28th Street: At about 6:30 am officers took a report of a citizen armed robbery. The victim told the officers that he was walking along the sidewalk when an unknown vehicle pulled up ahead of him and stopped. Two black males in their twenties got out of the vehicle and approached him. One of the men pointed a gun at him and demanded his money. As the victim reached into his back pocket for his wallet one of the suspects punched him in the left eye knocking him to the ground. He then handed over his wallet and the suspects fled in an unknown direction. PGPD detectives were notified and took over the follow-up investigation.

Sunday August 2nd:

3500 block of Bunker Hill Road: At about 7:30 am officers took a report of a stolen car. The victim told the officers that he parked his 2005 Toyota van (Maryland tags 31753M0) in front of his residence at about 1 am. When he returned to the van at about 7:30 he discovered that it had been stolen. No evidence as to those responsible was found at the scene and no witnesses could be located.

3300 block of Chillum Road: At about 8:25 pm officers arrested an individual identified by Queenstown Apartments security as the individual who used a knife to puncture two tires on the security company’s patrol vehicle. The individual was charged with destruction of property and tampering with a motor vehicle and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

Community Shredding Day

Please mark you calendars for Saturday July 18th, 2009 for community shredding day. Priority One Shredding of Bowie, Maryland will provide free personal shredding services and secure document destruction from 8 am until 11am at the Bunker Hill Fire Station. Priority One Shredding is a leading provider of personal and business secure document destruction. Residents are welcome to watch their documents being destroyed, and once the shredding process is completed, the remains are locked in the mobile destruction unit until the paper is recycled. Priority One will also provide residents with a variety of identity theft prevention information free of charge. If you miss the community shredding day on July 18th, be sure to bring your bulk documents to National Night Out. Priority One will be onsite from 6-9 pm providing shredding services to residents again, free of charge .

Parking Citation Collection Notices

As you read this entry, many of our residents may have received a collection notice regarding one or more unpaid parking citations. We have received at least a hundred telephone calls, and our Records staff is quite taxed sorting out those notices that were received in error, and those that are legitimate. Just a few notes of caution that I’d like to pass along to help make things easier for all concerned. First, no member of the police department staff will void, cancel or otherwise dispose of a valid collection notice. We are also not authorized to make any payment arrangements or reduce the amount owed to the City. The staff at City Hall is under the same constraints. Persons who receive a collection notice and have concerns that it was issued in error should call the police department during regular business hours and our staff will research the citation.
