Police Report: July 30 - August 1

July 30th:

3300 block of Buchanan Street: At about 9:45 pm officers took a report of a theft from auto. The victim told the officers that someone stole the rear license plate (MD 8BRX81) off his 1998 Oldsmobile sometime between 6 am and the time he notified police. No evidence or witnesses could be found.

July 31st:

3500 block of Rhode Island Avenue: At about 1:20 am officers on patrol recovered a 1999 Chrysler (MD tags 7ELP28) that had been reported stolen earlier in the evening from an address in DC. The officers initially saw the vehicle operating at a high rate of speed in the 3600 block of Bunker Hill Road. They followed it to the dead end of 35th Street where it crashed through the fence, drove down the hill and came to rest on Rhode Island Avenue. The driver and front seat passenger were seen exiting the vehicle running to the rear of 3500 Rhode Island Avenue. A Greenbelt Police K-9 was able to track the two to the area of Perry and 37th Streets before losing the track. Officers later learned that the suspects had just fled from several PGPD police cars in the 4400 block of Rhode Island Avenue before entering Mount Rainier. There were no injuries, no arrests made and the vehicle was impounded. MPD was notified of the recovery.

3800 block of 34th Street: At about 6:30 pm officers stopped a suspicious individual for a field interview. During the interview the officers discovered that the man had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s county for providing false information to a peace officer. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

August 1st:

4600 block of 30th Street: At about 1:30 am officers responded for a report of a fight in progress inside a vehicle. When the officers arrived they attempted to stop one of the participants for a field interview. The man fled from the officers but was apprehended after a short foot pursuit and struggle. He was highly intoxicated and was subsequently arrested, charged with failing to obey a lawful order of a police officer, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest. He was delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville without further incident.

3800 block of 37th Street: At about 9:50 am officers took a report of a theft from auto. The victim/owner told the officers that sometime during the previous evening someone broke out a window to his 2009 Nissan and stole various items that were inside the car. The vehicle was processed for evidence with negative results.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: At about 3:20 pm officers responded to the report of a customer dispute. The officers learned that an argument between a store employee and a customer escalated to the point where the customer allegedly spit on the employee and the employee punched the customer. Since the assault did not take place in the presence of the officers both parties were advised of their options with the District Court commissioner. During the conversation with the officers the customer became extremely irate and began yelling profanities inside the store disturbing other customers. He was arrested, charged with disorderly conduct and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

Crime Prevention Tip: Car Alarms

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage. So, the next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed when you retire for the night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone tries to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, within a few se...
