Police Report: August 13-19

August 13th:

34th Street and Windom Road: At about 9:15 am officers stopped a vehicle because the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license. He was cited for both violations and his vehicle was impounded.

3200 block of Varnum Street: At about 3:20 pm officers issued criminal citations to three individuals for drinking alcoholic beverages in public.

August 14th:

5600 block of Annapolis Road: At about 3:30 am MRPD officers assisted Bladensburg Police with several large fights and crowd control at the Mexico Lindo. MRPD officers deployed pepper spray on a highly intoxicated combative individual who was arrested for assaulting a Bladensburg Police Officer. No Mount Rainier or Bladensburg Officers were injured.

3500 block of Rhode Island Avenue: At about 6:20 am officers took a report of vandalism to a building. Sometime during the previous night someone had spray painted graffiti on the building that matched several previous incidents. The vandalism/graffiti is not gang related.

August 15th:

4200 block of 28th Street: At about 1 am officers took a report of a citizen armed robbery. The victim told the officers that she was approached by two young black males who displayed a handgun and took her car keys. The suspects took the victim’s car and fled the area. Her boyfriend chased after the suspects but lost sight of them in the 2500 block of Arundel Road. A search of the area for the suspects and the victim’s car proved negative. PGPD robbery detectives responded to the scene to interview the victim and assume a follow-up investigation.

3500 block of 37th Street: At about 7 am officers impounded a vehicle that was parked blocking a private driveway. Attempts to contact the registered owner of the vehicle prior to it being towed were unsuccessful.

August 16th:

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: At about 1 am officers took a report of a runaway juvenile. The juvenile’s father told the officers that the child ran away after an argument and that this was not the first time that he had reported the child missing for the same reason. The juvenile’s information was entered into the NCIC missing persons database.

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road: At about 8:30 pm officers from the Metro Transit Police notified MRPD that they had recovered a 2001 GMC van that was reported stolen from the 3200 block of Queens Chapel Road on August 10th. Metro Transit officers stopped the vehicle for a traffic violation at Southern Avenue and Wheeler Road and made one arrest in the case. The victim was notified of the recovery and met Metro Transit Police at the scene of the recovery to take possession of her vehicle.

August 17th:

4700 block of 25th Street: At about 5:30 am officers took a report of a stolen vehicle. The victim told the officers that she parked her vehicle by her residence at about 12:30 this morning and when she returned for it she discovered that it had been stolen. No evidence was recovered and no witnesses were identified.

3700 block of Shepherd Street: At about 1 pm officers took a report of a citizen armed robbery. The victim told the officers that as he was unloading items from his vehicle he saw a silver vehicle pull up behind him. As he started to walk towards his residence he was approached from behind by an unidentified man who placed a black revolver to his head and demanded his money. The suspect then removed the victim’s gold necklace and bracelet and told him to go in the house. The victim complied and the suspect got into the waiting silver vehicle and fled the area. A canvass of the area for the suspect and his vehicle proved negative. PGPD robbery detectives responded to the scene to interview the victim and assume a follow-up investigation.

2900 block of Allison Street: At about 1:30 pm MRPD received a call from the Metropolitan Police Department notifying us that they recovered a 2005 Buick Lacrosse that was reported stolen from an address in the 2900 block of Allison Street on September 27th, 2007. The vehicle was located at their Blue Plains impound lot located at 5001 Shepherd Street, S.W. GEICO Insurance took custody of the vehicle and the victim/owner was notified.

4400 block of 31st Street: At about 7:20 pm officers stopped a vehicle being driven by an individual who was known to have an open arrest warrant obtained by MRPD for 1st and 2nd Degree assault and reckless endangerment. The individual was allowed to drive his vehicle back to his residence. He was then arrested on the warrants and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: At about 10:45 pm Hyattsville City Police notified MRPD that they had located the runaway juvenile reported missing on August 16th. HCP officers located the juvenile at an address in the 5800 block of Queens Chapel Road. The juvenile was unharmed and HCP officers transported him back to his residence and released him to his father.

3800 block of 34th Street: At about 11:15 pm officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation (headlight out). As the officers approached the vehicle to speak with the driver they smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside. Further investigation revealed that the driver was in possession of an open alcohol container and a clear sandwich bag containing 13.8 grams of marijuana having a street value of $276.00. He was arrested and charged with the traffic violation, open alcohol in a motor vehicle, possession of CDS and possession of CDS paraphernalia. He was delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville and the vehicle was impounded.

August 18th:

4300 block of 28th Place: At about 12:45 am officers took a report of a citizen armed robbery. The officers met with two victims who said that a dark colored 4-door vehicle with tinted glass (possibly a BMW) pulled up next to them. One of the vehicle’s occupants asked the victims a question and, not knowing the answer, they began to walk away. As they walked two suspects, one armed with a black handgun approached and ordered them to lie on the ground. The victims complied and the two suspects went through the victims’ pockets and stole their cell phones and cash. Both suspects then ran back to the vehicle and fled the area. Surrounding police agencies were given a lookout for the vehicle and the two suspects but they were not located. PGPD robbery detectives responded to interview the victims and assume a follow-up investigation. The suspects were described as:

Suspect #1 – Black male, about 20 years old, 5’9” tall, 160 lbs., facial hair, wearing blue baggy jeans and large glasses.
Suspect #2 – Light skin black male, about 20 years old, 6’3” tall, 185 lbs., wearing a black baggy shirt and dark colored jeans.

August 19th:

3249 Rhode Island Avenue: At about 8:30 am an individual walked into the Mount Rainier police station and to surrender on an open arrest warrant issued through the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Department for trespassing. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi

Police Report: June 9-10

June 9th : 2500 block of Allison Street : At about 1 pm officers took a report of a citizen robbery . The victim told the officers and PGPD robbery detectives that she arrived to meet a client when she was approached by two black males. One of the men approached her from the front; the second came up behind her and placed her in a head lock. The second man demanded the keys to her gold 2005 Honda Accord (MD tags 9FA Y36). The victim complied and the two got into her car and fled the scene. The victim described her assailants as black males about 19-20 years of age. The first man was about 5’8” tall with shoulder length dreadlocks and was wearing a white t-shirt, long jean shorts, white socks and tennis shoes. The second man was about 5’10” tall, also had shoulder length dreadlocks and was wearing a white navy hat. The officers also discovered a white 2004 Chevrolet Express van that is believed to have been driven to the scene by the two suspects. A check of the vehicle’s registration

Boston Marathon/West, Texas Spam Campaigns

There is a new spam campaign in circulation using the Boston Marathon bombings that occurred on April 15, 2013 as a lure. Users are sent an e-mail encouraging them to a watch a video of the explosion. When the user clicks on the enclosed link to watch the video malware is installed on the user’s computer.   The following URL patterns have been found in these e-mails: http://[IP-address]/boston.html   http://[IP-address]/news.html   When the user clicks on one of the links the Kehlios worm is installed on the user’s system which has the capacity to send spam; carry out Distributed Denial of Service Attacks; and steal online currency such as bitcoins. Most major anti-virus vendors have signatures for detecting this malware so users should keep their antivirus programs up-to-date.   In addition to the Boston Marathon spam campaign, a West, Texas plant explosion spam campaign has also sprung up.
