Police Report: July 30 - August 1

July 30th:

3300 block of Buchanan Street: At about 9:45 pm officers took a report of a theft from auto. The victim told the officers that someone stole the rear license plate (MD 8BRX81) off his 1998 Oldsmobile sometime between 6 am and the time he notified police. No evidence or witnesses could be found.

July 31st:

3500 block of Rhode Island Avenue: At about 1:20 am officers on patrol recovered a 1999 Chrysler (MD tags 7ELP28) that had been reported stolen earlier in the evening from an address in DC. The officers initially saw the vehicle operating at a high rate of speed in the 3600 block of Bunker Hill Road. They followed it to the dead end of 35th Street where it crashed through the fence, drove down the hill and came to rest on Rhode Island Avenue. The driver and front seat passenger were seen exiting the vehicle running to the rear of 3500 Rhode Island Avenue. A Greenbelt Police K-9 was able to track the two to the area of Perry and 37th Streets before losing the track. Officers later learned that the suspects had just fled from several PGPD police cars in the 4400 block of Rhode Island Avenue before entering Mount Rainier. There were no injuries, no arrests made and the vehicle was impounded. MPD was notified of the recovery.

3800 block of 34th Street: At about 6:30 pm officers stopped a suspicious individual for a field interview. During the interview the officers discovered that the man had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s county for providing false information to a peace officer. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

August 1st:

4600 block of 30th Street: At about 1:30 am officers responded for a report of a fight in progress inside a vehicle. When the officers arrived they attempted to stop one of the participants for a field interview. The man fled from the officers but was apprehended after a short foot pursuit and struggle. He was highly intoxicated and was subsequently arrested, charged with failing to obey a lawful order of a police officer, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest. He was delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville without further incident.

3800 block of 37th Street: At about 9:50 am officers took a report of a theft from auto. The victim/owner told the officers that sometime during the previous evening someone broke out a window to his 2009 Nissan and stole various items that were inside the car. The vehicle was processed for evidence with negative results.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: At about 3:20 pm officers responded to the report of a customer dispute. The officers learned that an argument between a store employee and a customer escalated to the point where the customer allegedly spit on the employee and the employee punched the customer. Since the assault did not take place in the presence of the officers both parties were advised of their options with the District Court commissioner. During the conversation with the officers the customer became extremely irate and began yelling profanities inside the store disturbing other customers. He was arrested, charged with disorderly conduct and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). Police Report: June 9-10

June 9th : 2500 block of Allison Street : At about 1 pm officers took a report of a citizen robbery . The victim told the officers and PGPD robbery detectives that she arrived to meet a client when she was approached by two black males. One of the men approached her from the front; the second came up behind her and placed her in a head lock. The second man demanded the keys to her gold 2005 Honda Accord (MD tags 9FA Y36). The victim complied and the two got into her car and fled the scene. The victim described her assailants as black males about 19-20 years of age. The first man was about 5’8” tall with shoulder length dreadlocks and was wearing a white t-shirt, long jean shorts, white socks and tennis shoes. The second man was about 5’10” tall, also had shoulder length dreadlocks and was wearing a white navy hat. Boston Marathon/West, Texas Spam Campaigns

There is a new spam campaign in circulation using the Boston Marathon bombings that occurred on April 15, 2013 as a lure. Users are sent an e-mail encouraging them to a watch a video of the explosion. When the user clicks on the enclosed link to watch the video malware is installed on the user’s computer.   The following URL patterns have been found in these e-mails: http://[IP-address]/boston.html   http://[IP-address]/news.html   When the user clicks on one of the links the Kehlios worm is installed on the user’s system which has the capacity to send spam; carry out Distributed Denial of Service Attacks; and steal online currency such as bitcoins. Most major anti-virus vendors have signatures for detecting this malware so users should keep their antivirus programs up-to-date.   In addition to the Boston Marathon spam campaign, a West, Texas plant explosion spam campaign has also sprung up.
