Police Report: June 19-21

Friday June 19th:

4000 block of 34th Street: At about 9:15am officers took a report of a stolen auto. The victim/owner told the officers that he parked and locked his burgundy colored 2004 Jeep Liberty (Maryland tag 545M727) by his residence on June 18th at about 9:30 pm. When he returned for his Jeep this morning he discovered that it had been stolen. This vehicle was later reported to be involved in several armed robberies in the District I area.

Saturday June 20th:

4200 block of 30th Street: At about 6:30am officers received a call for a stolen auto. The victims/owners told the officers that their 1998 Jeep Cherokee was parked and locked by their residence on June 19th at about 9:30 pm. When they returned this morning they discovered that their Jeep had been stolen.

2300 block of Varnum Street: At about 8:00 am officers received a call to respond to the police station to take a robbery report. The victims (two) told the officers that at about 2 am this morning today they were walking in the 2300 block of Varnum Street when a black male armed with a silver revolver approached and pointed the gun at them. He then demanded their wallets and cell phones. They complied and the suspect fled on foot.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: At about 5:45 pm officers observed a 1996 Oldsmobile commit a minor traffic violation. The officers stopped the vehicle and a further investigation revealed that it was unregistered and displaying tags issued to another vehicle. The driver was charged accordingly and the vehicle was impounded.

3000 block of Queens Chapel Road: At about 2 pm officers received a call for a theft. The reporting person told the officers that he left his wallet in another person’s car and was unable to contact the person to retrieve his wallet. He was advised of his options and a report was written.

3300 block of Perry Street: At about 11:40 pm officers observed an individual consuming an open alcoholic beverage. He was issued a criminal citation for the violation and sent on his way.

Chillum Road & Queenstown Drive: At about 11:55 pm power shift officers stopped a vehicle for minor traffic violations. The driver was found to have an open warrant for failure to appear in court on a charge of possession of marijuana. He was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

Sunday June 21st:

2300 block of Varnum Street: At about 8:05 am officers responded for the report of a theft from the 7-11 store. When the officers arrived they stopped an individual who matched the description of the thief. The individual was found to have an open arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on a charge of driving an uninsured vehicle. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. He settled the theft with 7-11 by paying for the items he allegedly stole and 7-11 declined to press charges on the misdemeanor theft.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: At about 3:40 pm officers received a call for a vandalism to auto. The victims/owners told the officers that they parked and locked their vehicle at about 10 am in good condition. They returned to their vehicle at about 3:40 pm and discovered that the front passenger window had been smashed out. Nothing was discovered missing from inside the vehicle and no evidence was found that those responsible tried to steal the vehicle.

4100 block of Russell Avenue: At about 1:55 pm officers received a call for a vandalism to auto. The victim/owner told the officers that he parked and locked his vehicle at his residence on June 19th. When he returned to the vehicle this afternoon he discovered that the front passenger window had been smashed out. Nothing was discovered missing from inside the vehicle and no evidence was found that those responsible tried to steal the vehicle.

36th & Perry Streets: At about 4:20 pm power shift officers observed a vehicle commit a minor traffic violation. When the officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle the driver refused to stop. After a short pursuit the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed in the 3800 block of 38th Street. The driver then fled on foot but the officers were able to catch and arrest him a short distance away. Once he was in custody the officers discovered that he had an open arrest warrant for distribution of marijuana and did not have a driver’s license. He was arrested on the warrant and charged with numerous traffic violations. He was delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville and the vehicle was impounded.

Community Shredding Day

Please mark you calendars for Saturday July 18th, 2009 for community shredding day. Priority One Shredding of Bowie, Maryland will provide free personal shredding services and secure document destruction from 8 am until 11am at the Bunker Hill Fire Station. Priority One Shredding is a leading provider of personal and business secure document destruction. Residents are welcome to watch their documents being destroyed, and once the shredding process is completed, the remains are locked in the mobile destruction unit until the paper is recycled. Priority One will also provide residents with a variety of identity theft prevention information free of charge. If you miss the community shredding day on July 18th, be sure to bring your bulk documents to National Night Out. Priority One will be onsite from 6-9 pm providing shredding services to residents again, free of charge .

Parking Citation Collection Notices

As you read this entry, many of our residents may have received a collection notice regarding one or more unpaid parking citations. We have received at least a hundred telephone calls, and our Records staff is quite taxed sorting out those notices that were received in error, and those that are legitimate. Just a few notes of caution that I’d like to pass along to help make things easier for all concerned. First, no member of the police department staff will void, cancel or otherwise dispose of a valid collection notice. We are also not authorized to make any payment arrangements or reduce the amount owed to the City. The staff at City Hall is under the same constraints. Persons who receive a collection notice and have concerns that it was issued in error should call the police department during regular business hours and our staff will research the citation.
