Police Report: February 18-20

February 18th:

3800 block of 31st Street: Theft from auto – 7:20 am. The owner of a 2005 Chrysler 300 told officers that she forgot to lock her vehicle and when she returned for it she discovered that several items had been stolen from inside.

2400 block of Varnum Street: Warrant arrest – 11 am. Officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for failing to appear in court on a charge of driving without a license. She was issued several state citations, arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4600 block of Rainier Avenue: Residential burglary – 1 pm. Officers responded for the report of an activated residential alarm. When officers arrived on the scene they found a front window ajar. It was undetermined if anything had been stolen from the residence. A search of the area for evidence/witnesses proved negative.

3400 block of Otis Street: Emergency petition – 3:45 pm. Officers initially responded for the report of a man down. They located a man who they determined was under the influence of suspected PCP. When the man threatened to assault the officers they took him into custody and transported him to the Washington Adventist Hospital for emergency medical and psychological examinations. He was released to the custody of hospital medical personnel.

February 19th:

3000 block of Upshur Street: Residential burglary – 7:50 pm. The homeowner told officers that he returned home to discover that someone had entered his residence, ransacked the interior and stole several items of personal property. Officers observed that the rear door had a double dead bolt lock and could not be opened from inside or outside without a key, and etermined that the suspect(s) gained entry into the home by breaking a glass pane window with a rock then climbing through the window.

2300 block of Varnum Street: Citizen armed robbery – 8:10 pm. The victim was accosted by two men one of whom was armed with a black handgun. The victim provided the officers with a description of his assailants and during a search of the area they were able to stop and detain an individual matching the victim’s description. PGPD robbery detectives responded to the scene and took custody of the individual for further investigation. Charges in this case are pending additional investigation.

3400 block of Newton Place: Vandalism to auto – 9:10 pm. The owner of a 2002 Saturn told officers that when he came out to his vehicle he noticed several scratches on the front bumper.

February 20th:

2500 block of Queens Chapel Road: Traffic – 3:10 am. Officers conducting Laser speed enforcement stopped a vehicle for 60 mph in the 35 mph speed zone. Further investigation revealed that the driver had a suspended Maryland license. He was issued several state citations and his vehicle was impounded.

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi

Police Report: June 9-10

June 9th : 2500 block of Allison Street : At about 1 pm officers took a report of a citizen robbery . The victim told the officers and PGPD robbery detectives that she arrived to meet a client when she was approached by two black males. One of the men approached her from the front; the second came up behind her and placed her in a head lock. The second man demanded the keys to her gold 2005 Honda Accord (MD tags 9FA Y36). The victim complied and the two got into her car and fled the scene. The victim described her assailants as black males about 19-20 years of age. The first man was about 5’8” tall with shoulder length dreadlocks and was wearing a white t-shirt, long jean shorts, white socks and tennis shoes. The second man was about 5’10” tall, also had shoulder length dreadlocks and was wearing a white navy hat. Boston Marathon/West, Texas Spam Campaigns

There is a new spam campaign in circulation using the Boston Marathon bombings that occurred on April 15, 2013 as a lure. Users are sent an e-mail encouraging them to a watch a video of the explosion. When the user clicks on the enclosed link to watch the video malware is installed on the user’s computer.   The following URL patterns have been found in these e-mails: http://[IP-address]/boston.html   http://[IP-address]/news.html   When the user clicks on one of the links the Kehlios worm is installed on the user’s system which has the capacity to send spam; carry out Distributed Denial of Service Attacks; and steal online currency such as bitcoins. Most major anti-virus vendors have signatures for detecting this malware so users should keep their antivirus programs up-to-date.   In addition to the Boston Marathon spam campaign, a West, Texas plant explosion spam campaign has also sprung up.
