Police Report: February 21-23

February 21st:

3700 block of 36th Street: Theft from auto - 9:05 am. The victim/owner told officers that sometime between February 19th at 11 pm and February 20th at 8 am someone entered his unlocked vehicle and stole several items of personal property.

4400 block of 30th Street: Residential burglary - 3:15 pm. The homeowner told officers that sometime between 11 am and 3:15 pm someone broke into his home and stole a laptop computer from the kitchen table. The officers determined that the suspects gained entry into the home by breaking a window out of a rear door.

February 22nd:

3200 block of Upshur Street: Stolen auto - 9:15 am. Officers responded for the report of a stolen vehicle that had just occurred. The victim/owner told the officers that she left her vehicle running and unlocked while retrieving a personal item from her residence. When she turned to go back to her car she saw a man get into the car and drive off. A short time later an officer located the vehicle and began following it while waiting for backup officers to arrive. When the driver realized he was being followed by police he fled into DC at a high rate of speed. The officers did not pursue the vehicle into DC. A short while later the vehicle was found crashed near the intersection of 3rd & Oglethorpe Streets. The driver fled on foot and was not apprehended. MPD officers impounded the vehicle for evidence processing and the victim was notified of the recovery.

3300 block of Chillum Road: Traffic - 10:30 pm. Officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a driver’s license. He was issued several traffic citations and his vehicle was impounded.

32nd & Perry Streets: Vehicle impound - 10:50 pm. Officers impounded a Dodge van that had been parked at the location for an extended period of days. The van was displaying license plates that were not on file and the vehicle itself was unregistered.

February 23rd (early morning):

4600 block of 27th Street: Assault - 1:10 am. Officers received a call for an assault that had just occurred. When they arrived they spoke with the victim who said that she and her boyfriend had gotten into a verbal argument. The boyfriend escalated the argument when he struck her in the face with a plastic snow shovel. The victim sustained a small laceration above her eye. She told officers that she did not wish to cooperate further. She was provided medical attention and referred to the District Court Commissioner for further assistance.

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage. So, the next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed when you retire for the night.
