Police Report: December 30-31

December 30th:

4700 block of 27th Street: Stolen auto – 3:40 am. A blue 2001 Hyundai Sonata (MD tags 084AZV) was stolen from the handicapped space where it had been parked by the owner at about 3 pm on the 29th.

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Theft from auto – 3:30 pm. The rear tag (Maryland 8EEY64) from a 2005 Toyota Corolla was discovered stolen by the vehicle’s owner. The theft occurred sometime between 8 pm on the 29th and the time it was reported to police.

December 31st:

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Commercial armed robbery – 2:10 am. Two black males armed with handguns and dressed in dark clothing with hoods came into the store and armed with handguns. They forced the store clerks to open the cash register and put the cash into a back pack. Both suspects fled the scene on foot towards Eastern Avenue after the robbery. A K-9 track was ineffective in locating the suspects. PGPD robbery detectives responded to assume a follow-up investigation.

3400 block of Eastern Avenue: Warrant arrest - 7:45 pm. Officers responded to what was reported as a verbal domestic dispute between and a female and a male. They were told that the male half of the dispute had fled the area on foot. They were able to locate him and immediately recognized him as the man wanted for the stabbing that occurred at the Mount Rainier Library on December 27th. As soon as the subject saw the officers he fled on foot down Bladensburg Rd into the District of Columbia. One officer was able to catch the man and he violently resisted arrest. During the struggle to get control of the man, he and the officer crashed through a wooden fence and fell down a 35-foot embankment onto the CSX railroad tracks. During the fall the officer’s handgun became dislodged from its holster. The suspect grabbed the gun and pointed it at the officer as if to fire. The officer grabbed the gun and was able to wrest it away from the suspect and re-holster it. Back-up officers from MRPD and MPD arrived and they too were forced to struggle with the suspect before finally getting him under control and under arrest. The suspect was taken into custody by MPD and charged him with several crimes including assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and as a fugitive from justice on the 1st degree felony assault warrant. The MRPD officer was not seriously injured during the incident. The suspect was treated and released from Washington Hospital Center.

3200 block of Queenstown Drive: Warrant arrest - 2:50 am. Officers responded for a loud noise complaint. While they were investigating they stopped and questioned a man who was acting suspiciously. They discovered that the man had three open warrants through Montgomery County PD for traffic related offenses. He was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. The individuals responsible for the loud noise were also located and advised to lower their music.

Crime Prevention Tip: Car Alarms

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage. So, the next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed when you retire for the night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone tries to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, within a few se...
